Today's Opinions

  • Is American capitalism waning?

And does it matter? It is easy to ignore what is happening in the rest of the world until it comes back and smacks us in the face. It seems that this is what happened a couple of weeks ago as most Americans celebrated President’s Day.

Consider that our troubles have been portrayed as going from Wall Street to Main Street, but that doesn’t begin to outline the problem. No one had thought that maybe it might also affect the Ginza or countless other sections of the world.

  • Hillary being hobbled already

Sometimes in life we get an opportunity to “put a shot across the bow” of someone, usually a politician, and hopefully be able to do so in a somewhat humorous way. We can do this because it’s America and we are each entitled to our own opinion, to the left, right or wherever. This shot is centered on Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, not one of my favorite people.

  • Isn’t hoping for stimulus success good for all?

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. That definition, attributed to Albert Einstein, has been used a great deal lately. Did the Democrats win the battle and lose the war, or vice versa?

Here’s what we as a people know – the Democrats have a strong majority in the House and a reasonably filibuster-proof presence in the Senate. Yet it feels as if they won a Pyrrhic victory. Did they win the election and lose the war? Or have they made one small gain and lost an advantage?

  • All about inflation, deflation, and reflation

Are the bank bailouts and the stimulus plan going to bring back carefree days of easy money? We don’t think so. Even the Walt Disney Company couldn’t reproduce the economic fantasy of this decade.

Stated bluntly, governments, consumers, banks, and businesses are over their heads in debt. Piling on trillions in additional debt isn’t going to cancel the consequences of our long orgy of spending more than we earn and produce.

  • Can communities make a fossil fuel difference?

What an exciting time to be alive. Large buildings, (such as churches, hospitals and schools) have adequate space on the roof (or on the property) to generate sustainable solar energy – enough to supply the needs of the organization, and to also supplement the needs of the community. The mission of FUSE (Faiths United for Sustainable Energy) is to educate and mobilize faith communities to act on the increasingly harmful effects of our country’s dependence on fossil fuels. • It’s all about government control

We seem to hear more and more the word “socialism” being bandied about but no real effort by our administration, Congress or the business community to refute what has been said by those who are all for America being turned from a Republic and all our capitalism benefits, to their favored type of government destroying America.

  • “Funny, I don’t remember being absent minded.”

  • An empty warning  – or does

    the president mean business?

President Obama has warned the mayors of our larger cities not to waste the stimulus money that is being given to them to boost the economy in their areas. I must ask the president what he means in his warning when he gives our money to the independent mayors who want to please their constituents by spending this money on them.

Which wrist will be slapped because of these expenditures, the left or the right?
