  • Read correctly

A reader complained about an article of mine. I will give him the courtesy of not mentioning his name (something he did not extend to me.) The passages in question were quotes from an article in U.S. News and World Report. Why insult Barney Frank, who was not guilty as accused, by saying he was a key figure in the ruination of the banking and housing industries? And by the way, the passage was a quote from a column written by the late Pulitzer-prize winner David S. Broder.

  • Dog owner responsibility 03-18-2011

A law is already on the books concerning a dog trespassing on private property and killing a pet on its own property.

Why would any reasonable person want this to happen twice? It is truly heartbreaking to see your much loved and cared for pet to be murdered in this fashion. Marion County commissioners are being pressured to let this occur again on your property by the same dog before being classified as "dangerous."

  • Middle-class Americans are not imbeciles 03-18-2011

After stereotypically describing average Americans as “SUV-riding, Starbucks-wafting imbeciles in debt up to their ears,” and characterizing the Tea Party movement as a kind of  “new old-time religion” engaged in mind control, Wendy E. Binnie complains in her column of March 11 about the apparent paradox of rising wealth alongside growing unemployment.

  • Marionsfor Peace rally 03-18-2011

Marionsfor Peace will join with activist groups throughout the nation on Saturday, March 19 – the 8th anniversary of the U.S.-led “shock and awe” attack on the cradle of civilization -- to demand an immediate end to the futile and shameful wars on Afghanistan and Iraq which are driving our nation into moral and financial bankruptcy. The rally, which begins at noon, will take place at the corner of U.S. Highway 441 (Pine Street) and Southwest 17th Street in Ocala.

  • Cut everyone 03-18-2011

I understand the necessity of cutting expenses. To my knowledge every single service the middle class depends on will be cut. There is a dollar amount which can be calculated as a percentage.

Is it proper to suggest that the people who voted for the service cut join us in accepting the same percentage cut we do?

  • The U.S. political system 03-18-2011

Democracy in America may have an inherent legitimacy but it will not be much of a model to anyone if the government is divided against itself and cannot govern.

  • How High Is High? 03-11-2011

I question just how high gas prices must go before the vast majority of us will say enough is enough, stop depending on our enemies for oil and start using our own!   Experts tell us we have more oil within our borders, not counting off shore drilling, than Saudi Arabia.  It’s like having a garden in our back yard and not having the intelligence to eat what we grow, instead going to the market and buying it.

  • Double crossed 03-11-2011

As a former teacher in the state of Wisconsin and as someone who served as president of my local teacher’s association and who sat on two bargaining teams, I think I can offer an informative perspective on the conflict which is taking place in Madison and which will surely arise all over this floundering nation.

  • Who are the victims? 03-11-2011

Possibly a number of voters would like to know whose credit Marion County is using to get into private business in competition with legitimate business. Are the taxpayers the receivers of the bill through enormous tax billing and various fees for their water, sewer service and buildings permits?
