United Way Day of Caring deadline

United Way of Marion County will hold the 19th annual Day of Caring on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012. Day of Caring offers businesses, individuals, organizations and civic clubs the opportunity to help local nonprofit human service agencies accomplish much-needed projects during one day of organized volunteerism.
Volunteer work teams who are interested in participating or community organizations that have projects that need to be completed can fill out an application at www.uwmc.org. The deadline for team and project applications is Friday, Dec. 30.

KP Hole Park fees to change

Effective Jan. 1, the day use fee at KP Hole Park will change from $3 to $5. The Parks and Recreation Advisory Council had recommended the fee change to offset park expenses and assist with managing park capacity. The costs for annual individual and family passes remain unchanged, at $35 and $50 respectively.

Christ’s Church hosts pianist

Christ’s Church of Marion County will host Sarah Warner, graduate of Baylor School of Music and instructor of piano at The University of Oklahoma completing her Master of Piano Pedagogy, in concert Monday, Jan. 2, 5 p.m. Concert is open and free to the public.

Burrowing Owls: special programs

The Pioneer Garden Club is proud to present to the public noted author and speaker Betty Gilbert. Ms. Gilbert has devoted the past 10 years to the study of the Burrowing Owl, and has written two beautiful books on the subject, taken thousands of photos and has a DVD available. Ms. Gilbert’s program is Tuesday, Jan. 3 at 10 a.m. at the Pioneer Garden Club.
Also, the Marion Audubon Society presents Protecting Burrowing Owls...How did we fail?
The Florida Wildlife Commission will help us learn about how to protect these owls as well as other birds. The program is Thursday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Pioneer Garden Club.

Historical Novel Society meets

The Florida Chapter of the Historical Novel Society meets on the first Saturday of each month at 1 p.m. in the Community Room of the Central Ridge Library in Beverly Hills. Everyone is welcome.
The first Writers’ Retreat led by President Joyce Moore was a great success and the Chapter plans to offer more writers’ workshops in the New Year.

Scandinavian Club of Marion County

The Scandinavian Club of Marion County invites people of Danish, Finish, Icelandic, Norwegian and Swedish decent to join us at our next meeting on Jan. 21 at 11:30 a.m. in the ballroom at the Ocala Hilton, 3600 S.W. 36th Ave., in Ocala. The menu will be apple stuffed pork loin with mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetables, salad and desert.
