New Year’s Eve at Joy

On Friday evening between 4 and 7 p.m., Joy Lutheran will have an open church. Pastors Ed Holloway and Bill Rosenow will host a communion prayer service.

Families may come to church anytime between these hours and be greeted by the pastors who will pray with them and offer communion. Following this brief worship the families may enjoy fellowship and refreshments in the narthex.

On your way to that New Year’s Eve party consider stopping at church for a personal family style brief worship and give thanks.

Day of Caring deadline near

 United Way of Marion County will hold the 18th annual Day of Caring on Saturday, March 5. Day of Caring offers businesses, individuals, organizations and civic clubs the opportunity to help local nonprofit human service agencies accomplish much-needed projects during one day of organized volunteerism.

Volunteer work teams who are interested in participating or community organizations that have projects that need to be completed can fill out an application at www.uwmc.org. The deadline for team and project applications is Friday, Dec. 31.

Moose public breakfast for the New Year

A community public breakfast will continue at the Moose lodge every Sunday in January from 9 a.m. to noon.

Coffee, juice, omelet or any style eggs, potatoes, biscuits with gravy, toast, your choice of bacon, sausage or ham, all at one great price!

Income tax assistance volunteer training set



United Way of Marion County will be training volunteers for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program on Thursday, Jan. 6, from 5 to 9 p.m. at the United Way of Marion County, 1401 N.E. 2nd St., Ocala.

Volunteers are certified by the IRS and will provide free income tax assistance to Marion County residents beginning Tuesday, Jan. 18. VITA sites will be  in surrounding areas in Marion County and at the United Way office.

Shabbat services scheduled

Welcome the New Year with Congregation Beth Israel of Ocala at Shabbat services on Jan. 7 at 8 p.m. at the Collins Center, 9401 State Road 200, building 300. Please note that the Jewish congregation is meeting on the first Friday this month. Next month we will resume our regular second Friday schedule. Jennifer Singer, Educational Director from Congregation Kol HeNeshama (Reconstructionist) in Sarasota, will again lead our services with joyful singing, thoughtful insights and her signature story telling. Methodist Men serve breakfast

The United Methodist Men of Ocala West United Methodist Church will serve their famous all-you-can-eat breakfast on Saturday, Jan. 8, at the church on 105th Street, 7:30 to 9 a.m., for a great low price of $5. The variety is great, so gather a group and enjoy a good meal and a lot of fellowship.

Gospel music at Joy

The Jacob Brothers Gospel Music Trio will perform at Joy Lutheran Church on Saturday, Jan. 8 at 6 p.m. in the church sanctuary.

The Jacob Brothers, Bob and Mike Jacobs and Mike Lawyer, are gospel veterans and have been dedicated to the ministry spreading the Gospel through music since 1962.

Art lessons in Citrus Springs

Beginning colored pencil drawing starts on Saturday, Jan. 15 at the UU fellowship in Citrus Springs. The series continues every Saturday for six weeks. From 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., Jan Hitchcock, painter, ceramicist and professor from CCF, will guide you with color theory and fun assignments. Limited enrollment. Scandinavian Club meets

The Scandinavian Club of Marion County invites people of Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian and Swedish descent to come to the next meeting on Jan. 15 at the Hilton Ocala, 3600 S.W. 36th Ave. in Ocala. The menu will be apple and plum stuffed pork loin with mashed potatoes, vegetable, salad, bread, beverage and dessert. Entertainment will be provided by Harry Chambers.

Circle Square health, wellness expo


The ninth annual Health and Wellness Expo will take place on Saturday, Jan. 15, at the Circle Square Cultural Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Come and see what Ocala has to offer in the field of health care and learn the latest in medical advances. This is a free event.

This year’s Expo is sponsored by On Top of the World Communities and Munroe Regional Medical Center (MRMC) and will feature various services offered by the hospital, including information on heart health, diabetes, stroke, nutrition and more. Representatives from area health care-related agencies will also be on hand to provide information and answer questions regarding your health.

Hispanic Dinner at St. Jude

‘Food for Thought’ event at Our Redeemer

At Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 5200 S.W. The Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 4781 will host the annual fashion show and luncheon on Friday, Feb. 18, at noon. The theme will be Stars and Stripes Forever. The luncheon will be prepared by their chef Margie with the help of dedicated members. Many wonderful gifts have been collected. Marilyn French is the chairperson.

Hospice announces trail ride


Hospice of Marion County, Inc. will hold its 11th annual “Horses for Hospice” Trail Ride on Sat., Feb. 19, on the Central Florida Greenway at the Florida Horse Park in Ocala.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the first ride leaves at 9:15 a.m. Riders travel from as far as Jacksonville and Tampa to spend two hours on the trail. Following the ride, participants can enjoy lunch by Tommy’s BBQ, live entertainment by Bordertown and 50 door prizes will be distributed to participants.

Proceeds from this event will benefit Patient Care Programs. The minimum donation to ride is $30. Wagons are welcome; $30 for driver and $10 per passenger. Horse lovers who are unable to ride may purchase a $10 ticket to enjoy lunch and entertainment. For more information or to register, call 352-854-5218.
