Shabbat evening service set

Congregation Beth Israel of Ocala will hold a Shabbat evening service on March 12 at 8 p.m. at the Collins Medical Resource Center, Building 300 on State Road 200 in Ocala. The service will by led by Sonia Peterson and it will be conducted according to the Reconstructionist format. The service will feature joyous singing and congregational participation. Moose Lodge plans open house

The Moose Lodge will conduct an open house on Saturday, March 13, from 10 a.m. to noon at the lodge, 10411 S.W. 110th St., about one mile north of the State Road 200 Oak Run Entrance.

The public, men and women, are invited to see and learn more about the fraternity. Free, light food and refreshments will be provided.

United Methodist breakfast planned

The United Methodist Men of Ocala West United Methodist Church, 9330 S.W. 105th St., will serve their famous, delicious breakfast on Saturday, March 13, from 7:30 to 9 a.m.. A wide varied menu is offered at a cost of $5 per person. Mark your calendar, bring a friend or neighbor and enjoy not only the fine meal but good fellowship. All proceeds from this program are donated to church and local charities, and your support will enhance our ability to maintain this program.

Gardeners plan spring festival

Does this past winter have you seeing brown? Go back to green at the annual Master Gardeners’ Springs Festival, one of the largest plant sales and gardening expos in the area. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, March 13, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday, March 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the UF/IFAS Marion County Extension Service, next door to the Southeastern Livestock Pavilion (2232 N.E. Jacksonville Road, Ocala).

With more than 120 vendor booths selling a large array of plants, garden décor and water pond accessories, attendees will be able to find close to everything they may need for gardening and landscaping in one place. The event will also have many learning opportunities for area residents including educational booths, in-garden talks and seminars on this year’s Spring Festival theme, “Green Home Gardening.” Saturday seminar topics include: Growing Local, Eating Local (10 a.m.); Identification and Solutions to Common Lawn Problems (noon); and Environmental Benefits of Utilizing Native Plants (2 p.m.) On Sunday, learn about Florida-friendly landscapes (1 p.m.) or dooryard fruit production (3 p.m.).

First Congregational Musicale

First Congregational’s annual Sunday Musicale is set for March 14 at 3 p.m. This year, the chancel and hand bell choirs will be featured along with solos, ensembles and specialty acts. Familiar music ranging from Ave Maria and Amazing Grace to Doo Wop and Irving Berlin will be performed. And, for those who like to sing, there’s also audience participation segment. Teachers group to perform

The Marion Chamber Music Society presents nine members of the Gainesville Music Teachers Association Performing Group on March 14, 3 p.m. at Queen of Peace Church. This concert presents a variety of instruments to include flute, clarinet, viola, voice and piano and features compositions by Chopin, Brahms, Schubert and Debussy, among others. Taxpayers Action Group to meet

The Taxpayers Action Group of Marion County urges all members and invites all residents to attend the March 15 monthly meeting. The meeting starts at 6 p.m. and will be at the Public Library on Silver Springs Boulevard. Speakers will be Tom McNiff, managing editor, and Brad Rogers, editorial page editor, both of the Ocala Star Banner.

Circle Square goes green

Come join the party as the Circle Square Commons Town Square gets green for St. Patrick’s Day! Enjoy live Irish music by the Marion County Sheriff’s 18-piece pipe and drum band and watch the talented Inisheer Dancers perform traditional Irish dances. New times at Our Redeemer

Our Redeemer Lutheran Church at 5200 S.W. State Road 200. These are the new times for the mid-week Lenten service for March 17 at 11 a.m. and March 24 at 11 a.m.

Veterans Club to have speaker

On Wednesday, March 17, at 7 p.m. at the auditorium of the Orchid Club at Oak Run, the Veterans Club will have as it's guest speaker Joane Shaw, who is with the National Organization for POW/MIA. This a subject that all veterans will want to hear, as many families are still missing loved ones. If time permits there will be a short DVD on the Wounded Warrior Project. All residents and guests of Oak Run are welcome to attend this very informative talk.

Music series continues

The Lenten music series at First Congregational United Church of Christ continues on Wednesday, March 17, with a discussion of the musical style of Oratorio. We will listen to Handel's Messiah, which will set the stage for an explanation and discussion about Oratorio. The program begins at noon followed by a light lunch. The church is at 7171 S.W. Corned beef, cabbage dinner set

The Episcopal Church of the Advent, 11251 S.W. State Road 484, Dunnellon (1.3 miles west of State Road 200) will have its annual corned beef and cabbage dinner on Saturday, March 20. Serving begins at 5:30 p.m. and runs until 6:45.

Our menu consists of corned beef, cabbage, boiled potato, carrots, bread, desserts and beverages.

The public is invited. Donations of $8 per adults and $4 for children 6 through 12, under 6 are free.

The Ocala Jazz Society jams on Sunday, March 21, at the VFW across from Oak Run, 2-5 p.m. Food and drinks are available at the canteen. The event features great music, dancing is encourage. Beauty From Within is a free informational class on Alopecia, hair loss prevention, and cancer patients. Dr. Cherie Hansen will be our special speaker. Fashion show, lunch at VFW

The annual Ladies Auxiliary fashion show and luncheon will take place at VFW Post 4781, 9401 S.W. 110th St., Ocala, on April 9. Doors open at 11 a.m., donation of $10, fashions by Bon Worth. Entry deadline for golf tourney

CenturyLink will host a four-person Best Ball Scramble format golf tournament on Saturday, April 17. All proceeds from the event will be donated to United Way of Marion County.

The tournament will be held at Stone Creek Golf Course, 9676 S.W. 62nd Loop in Ocala, beginning at 8:30 a.m. The cost is $280 per team. Entry deadline is April 9.

Entry fee includes golf, cart, lunch and grab bags. Prizes will be awarded for longest drive and closest to the pin. Sponsorships are available for $125 per hole without a team or $100 with a team. Presenting sponsorships are also available. Sign up forms are available at www.uwmc.org.

Taste of Ocala tickets available online

Tickets are now available online for the Central Florida Community College Foundation Taste of Ocala fundraiser, which will be April 25.

E-tickets can be purchased at www.tasteofocala.org. Advance tickets are $25 for adults, $15 for CFCC students with identification, $15 for children 5 to 12 years old. Children under age 5 are admitted free. All tickets at the gate are $30. Paper tickets will be available on March 22.

The 22nd annual scholarship fundraiser will be held from noon to 4 p.m. at the Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road. Attendees will have an opportunity to sample dishes from the area’s finest restaurants as they support a worthy cause.

This year’s event is presented by Signature Brands LLC and promises to be fun for the entire family. Activities include a children’s tent with cookie decorating and clowns. There will be a silent auction and culinary arts students will demonstrate cake decorating. Diners can sit stage-side and listen to music provided by KTK-FM or socialize with friends under covered dining.

Over the past 21 years, about $325,000 has been disbursed to students through the CFCC Foundation’s Taste of Ocala scholarships.
