Lions Club garage sale

The Ocala Southwest Lions Club will hold a garage sale Saturday, April 9, at Ritz Eye Care parking lot, 6290 S.W. State Road 200, Ocala, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be lots of treasures for all. Please come see what bargains we have for you. Ask us which veteran organizations we support with your help.



Breakfast at Ocala West


The Ocala West United Methodist United Methodist Men will serve their customary outstanding breakfast on Saturday, April 9, from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the church on Southwest 105th Street. A wide array of breakfast food has become a tradition over the last years. The price is still only $5. Make up a party and enjoy the morning. All proceeds from these breakfasts are donated to charity.



Fine arts exhibit at Circle Square



On Saturday, April 9, On Top of the World Communities is hosting the 2011 Hands Across the Highway Fine Arts Exhibit at the Circle Square Cultural Center. The popular annual event will showcase local artists from On Top of the World Communities, Oak Run, Marion Landing, Cherrywood, Ocala Palms, Palm Cay, Spruce Creek Preserve, Pine Run and more. There will be live entertainment and admission to the exhibit is free.

Luncheon fashion show at 1st Congregational

The Women’s Fellowship of First Congregational United Church of Christ is hosting a luncheon and fashion show on Saturday, April 9 at noon in the Enrichment Center. Women's and men's fashions by Belk Department Store and lunch includes chicken salad, accompaniments, dessert and beverages. Tickets are $10 and include chances on door prizes. Concert at Countryside


The Central Florida Master Choir will present its spring concert “A Tribute to America – a concert of American Composers” at Countryside Presbyterian Church, 7768 S.W. Highway 200, Ocala on Sunday, April 10 at 3 p.m.

The Central Florida Master Choir, formed in 1998, has achieved a reputation for its artistic excellence and contribution to the community.

The 35 voice choir will sing “At the River” by Aaron Copeland”, Summertime” by George Gershwin, “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” by Albert Von Tilzer as well as works by Howard Hanson, Samuel Barber, Stephen Paulus and others. Harold W. McSwain, Jr. is the conductor and the piano accompanist is William Powell.

Trike-a-thon at Marion Oaks

On Sunday, April 10, starting at 10 am, the Adventurers Clubs sponsored by the Belleview and Marion-Spanish Seventh-day Adventist Churches will participate in a Trike A Thon to benefit St Jude Children’s Hospital. The participants in the Trike A Thon will ride from the Marion Oaks Community Center to Winn-Dixie and back to the Center.

The children are from 2 to 7 years old and in need of sponsors. If you wish to support this worthy cause, and for more information please contact Marlene Wright at 352-292-2440. Come out and cheer the young riders even if you are not a sponsor: it’s children helping children.

Hispanic Business Council meets


The Hispanic Business Council will host its Segundo Tuesday on April 12 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the College of Central Florida Enterprise Center on the second floor, 3003 S.W. College Road. Network until 6 p.m. -- bring your business cards – then enjoy a presentation by Workforce Connection on employee hiring tips and other valuable Human Resources information. From 7 to 7:30 p.m. will be round table networking where you may present your latest business news. Invite your colleagues and business associates. New members welcome!

The National Association of Retired Federal Employees and their spouses will meet April 14, at the Olive Garden Restaurant for lunch at 1 p.m. A short meeting follows at 2 p.m.

High Twelve Club to meet

The Greater Ocala High Twelve Club 665 will hold its monthly meeting on Friday April 15, at 11 a.m. at the Elks club, 702 N.E. 25th Ave., Ocala. Please note that this is one week earlier than normal due to the Good Friday observance.

 The speaker will be Captain Jimmy Pogue of the Sheriff’s Office. Captain Pogue is going to give us a power point presentation on the commuications used by the Sheriff’s Office. This will be very interesting.  You don't want to miss it.

We will also have a visit from the officers and their ladies of the Florida High Twelve Clubs. President, Fred Nelson and Lady Rita, First Vice President, Raymond Trudeau and Lady Janet, and Second Vice President, Bill Staple and Lady Sharon will honor us by their presence.

Once again after the meeting we will have another fabulous buffet lunch that we all enjoy. The cost is only $12 per person.

German American picnic set

The German American Club of Marion County picnic will take place on Sunday, April 17, from noon to 6 p.m., at Coehadjoe Park, 4225 N.E. 35th St., Ocala. Admission is $5 per member or $8 per non-member. Children under 12 are free. Music will be provided by Oskar the Bavarian.

Adult Spelling Bee planned

The Marion County Literacy Council (MCLC) is holding its seventh annual “Adult Spelling Bee” on Thursday, April 21, at the Ocala Hilton (3600 S.W. 36th Ave.) at 5:30 p.m.

The “Bee” includes dinner, silent auction, chance drawing, and the grand finale – a spelling bee competition among teams composed of corporate employees and community groups. Tickets to attend the event are $35/each or $60/couple.

Spelling Bee admission and chance drawing tickets are available at the Marion County Literacy Council office. Sponsorship opportunities are available. Call 352-690-7323 for inquiries.

All proceeds will benefit the Marion County Literacy Council, an organization of volunteer tutors who work one-on-one with Marion County adults needing help with reading, English, and GED preparation.

Concert:  Classic Hits and  Doo-Wop

A benefit concert will be held on Saturday, April 30 at 6:30 p.m. at First Congregational United Church of Christ's Enrichment Center, 7171 S.W. State Road 200.
The Rainbow Connection will be performing classic hits from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s and Nolie and The Greyhounds will take the stage with Traditional Doo-Wop.  This is a show you won't want to miss. Event benefits local scholarships


Hale Academy’s O’Cajun of the Year crawfish festival is planned for 6 p.m., Saturday, April 30, on the school’s campus, 3443 S.W. 20th St., Ocala (just north of the College of Central Florida). This event will benefit the school’s scholarship program. The admission is $5 for an all-u-can eat crawfish, plus organizers will serve beer and hurricanes.

One highlight of the evening is live Cajun music by The Porchdogs – a band for Louisiana-Style Cajun and Zydeco music. Also, Chris Glover will work the crowd as the opening act.

Organizers urge you to bring blankets or lawn chairs.

Dance to benefit Hospice


USA Dance Ocala Chapter 6027 is hosting a charity ball fundraiser to benefit Hospice of Marion County on Tuesday, May 3 from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Pioneer Garden Club (4331 East Silver Springs Blvd., next to the Appleton Museum).

The event features entertainment including professional dance exhibitions and live music performed by “Retro Express” Mitch and Diana. Other activities include open dancing, door prizes and chance drawings. General admission tickets are $15/person, which includes valet parking, food and beverages.

Attire is coat and tie to semi-formal for men and dress to semi-formal for ladies. All proceeds support Hospice of Marion County Patient Care Programs.

Derby Day ribs fundraiser

The Rotary Club of Ocala Southwest is selling tickets for its baby back ribs barbecue fundraiser, which will be on Saturday, May 7.

Tickets are $15 for a full rack of baby back ribs. All ribs will be cooked on site and wrapped for transport.

Ribs can be picked up from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Park Avenue Bank, 8375 S.W. State Road 200.

Tickets are available at the following locations: Park Avenue Bank, Mercantile Bank, 11250 S.W. 93rd Court Road; M&S Bank, 5400 S.W. College Road; and Alarion Bank, 7605 S.W. State Road 200.

All proceeds will benefit the College of Central Florida nursing scholarship program and local charities.

Yoga at Sholom Park

Dunnellon High School will hold a multi-class reunion for graduates from 1967 through 1972 on Saturday, May 14, called “A Day on the Rainbow” and “A Night at Juliettes.”

For A Day on the Rainbow - $25 from 8 a.m. to dusk at Rainbow Springs State Park. Various activities, deli sandwich and build a salad lunch.

The Night at Juliettes is $38 from 6 to 10:30 p.m. at Rainbow Springs Golf and Country Club, all you can eat buffet dinner, dance, various short presentations, music by Chris White, KJDJ Music.
