Driver accused of DUI

By Jim Clark

For the second time in three weeks, someone has been arrested for DUI with a small child in the vehicle.

This time it occurred on Oct. 1 at approximately 3 a.m., when a pickup truck was spotted making a turn on a red light at State Road 200 and Southwest 60th Avenue. Deputy Joseph Tussey followed the vehicle and pulled it over on Southwest 65th Avenue Road.

Inside he found Jeremy Bryant, 25, and Erica L. Steadt, 20, along with an infant who was lying in but not strapped into a car seat.

Bryant, the 7-month-old boy’s father, was accused of child abuse and driving under the influence. Passenger Steadt, the boy’s mother, was accused of child abuse and child neglect.

According to jail records, Steadt has been arrested in August 2008 for violation of probation for retail petit theft. She was released Oct. 14, 2008.

The same records show that Bryant was arrested in February 2009 for possession of drug paraphernalia and released the same day. He was then arrested on April 5 for violation of probation, and was released on Aug. 26, just five weeks before last week’s incident.

According to jail records, both suspects remained in jail on Tuesday afternoon. The baby was taken by a relative.
