Things are hummin' at the Oasis

Hello Readers: Cold, cold, cold! How cold was it? Well it was cold enough to have icicles hanging from a branch on a rose bush outside an office on State Road 200 at 9 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 6.

Super Bowl victory

The word went out and the fans showed up in style. Super Bowl XLIII was one of the most exciting games ever and you could feel the excitement as more than 30 of our Palm Cay residents cheered, cried, prayed and laughed their way down to the final seconds of the game.

On one table sat memorabilia that left no doubt as to who the fans are for. At another table we found a giant homemade cookie that reminded everyone what the evening was all about.

At all the tables you could see the wonderful fans who brought more than team support, they brought another victory home for the Palm Cay family.

Hummers Show

There was a fun show at the Oasis on Feb. 6, performed by the Hummers along with songstresses Poppy Blair, Jean Madigan and Karen Tieman. Joe Madigan acted as master of ceremonies. Joe led us in the Pledge of Allegiance in honor of those serving our country.

A mix of traditional and amusing songs allowed the audience to hum along, or giggle, especially when Karen sang her nonsense song, Hummertime, to the tune of Summertime. Along came the Hummers; Margaret, Donna, Ginny, Louise, June, Mary, Joyce and Ada playing tambourines, all looking festive in a Tijuana theme, and then changing to headbands sporting kazoos and a yellow rose attached to the headband for a rousing Yellow Rose of Texas.

Jean paid tribute to Joe, her husband and our MC, with a lovely rendition of All the Things You Are. Dressed like one of the cats, Jean sang Memories from the Broadway musical, Cats. Ron Frontin joined her on stage in Tom Jones-like fashion as they performed What’s New Pussy Cat.

One of Poppy Blair’s songs was Anytime You’re Feeling Lonely with the Hummers’ accompaniment. Then along comes Karen singing Dream Lover, dedicated to all lovers.

When Ron showed up, dressed like Tiny Tim, with flowing hair and ukulele in lip sync to Tip Toe Through the Tulips, it brought down the house.

Winners in the 50/50 drawing were Alice Wright and Cookie Breaman. Dessert of brownies and a wonderful bundt cake made by Sally Neuberger, along with coffee or tea ended a very nice evening at the Oasis.

Gabby Hatters

The Palm Cay Gabby Hatters met at the clubhouse Jan. 30. Queen Mother Lois Barber gave a reading and a report. Charlotte Steif, our treasurer, gave an update on our finances.

After the meeting we had lunch at Red’s Restaurant. The food and the service there is excellent.

Ellie Corcoran was hostess for the month and had them bake a lemon and cherry cake for the occasion. It was absolutely delicious!

In last week’s column, Wendell and Margaret Belieu’s wedding anniversary was incorrectly stated as 15 years, when in fact it is 50 years – their Golden Anniversary. Please forgive us, Wendell and Margaret, and may you celebrate another 50 years together.

Wedding congratulations go out to Frank and Jackie is Blasucci who were married Jan. 17, 2009. A great way to begin a New Year.

Birthday wishes go to Charlie McAleese and all those celebrating birthdays this month.

Until next time…
