Scholarship recipients recognized

By Deej Koebbe

Just down the road a piece, Preservist Teri Parker submitted the following for inclusion in this week’s Preserve column, concerning a Preservist remembered through a memorial scholarship:

During a recent church service, the widow of Harvey Washington was recognized for the establishment of a financial assistance scholarship to church members who are enrolled in college.

Harvey Washington died in April 2008. Donna Washington contributed money to assist young people who are attending college with unexpected expenses. This kind of aid exemplified the way Harvey lived his life, helping others who found themselves in a pinch.

The awards are made by New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church of Ocala. The first award was given to a University of Florida student. During the June 13 service, eight high school graduates received Bibles and $100 checks. Five of the grads received laptop computers through the Isom Washington II Scholarship Fund.

Two students received “Diamonds in the Ruff” scholarships totaling $500 each. Three nursing school students were awarded Lorene H. Bryant Scholarships of $500 to $800.

Church members who received college degrees this year were also recognized.

The emphasis on education and the support of young people as a mission of the church is due in large part to the leadership of Pastor Stanley Jacobs Sr., who served many years with the Marion County school system.

Thanks, Teri, for a job well done.
