Armando Testa honored by Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame

By Jan Liberio

Happy Valentines Day to all the readers out there! Whether it be a box of candy, a bouquet of flowers or even a beautiful card, let your loved one know you care about them.
A brand new Corvette would be nice too!

Feature for this month
After over 75 features for this column, either clubs/organizations, couples or individuals I will be featuring a man who passed away over eight years ago. His name is Armando “T” Testa. The reason for this article is because his wife Betty Testa went to Williamsport, Pennsylvania to accept an award in his behalf. Armando was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame on Nov. 13, Armando, known as “T” to his friends and fellow athletes, was a champion wrestler and lettered in football and wrestling in 1949-1950 plus being captain of the wrestling team at Williamsport High School.
After graduating and spending four years in the U.S. Air Force “T” received his undergraduate degree from Lycoming College in 1954 and was hired by the South Williamsport area school district to teach math and coach wrestling, track and football. He was part of the coaching staff of South Williamsport’s powerful football teams that dominated the West Branch league in the 1960s. He continued to coach until 1970. He and Betty had three children who now reside in New Jersey, Virginia and Louisiana. They and many other family members attended this wonderful banquet award. Betty received a beautiful plaque honoring her husband which she proudly displays on her wall.
“T” retired from teaching in 1990 and he and Betty soon moved to Spruce Creek North where they remained until he passed away in 2003.
Many residents remember “T” as he was the first one to set up Bocci teams, plus recruited resident nurses to have blood pressure screenings once a month. He served on the Board of Directors and worked many pancake breakfasts. You could always see him flipping hamburgers and hot dogs at special picnics. Betty recently donated two beautiful gas grills to Spruce Creek North in his honor.
He was president of the bowling league and eventually learned to play golf and even had a “hole in one.”
“T” and Betty volunteered at Ocala Regional Hospital for many years. Betty still volunteers at the Human Society Thrift shop where she has been for 20 years.
I thought this was a very heart-warming story about a lady who was so proud of her husband and all his accomplishments! How proud he would be of her today!
