New club forms

By Laura Smith

Dear readers, are we having fun yet? The holidays are here! We will head to Pensacola for Christmas. Our son will fly in from California. He had the audicity to call his sister to warn us when we arrive not to let “mom” shake the boxes he is having shipped. Like I would! Well maybe I have done so once or twice in the past. So I can’t wait to open my boxes Christmas morning.

On another note I stopped by the Renaissance Club’s informational meeting Sunday. . Since doing this column I am trying to visit various clubs. There were about 34 women in attendance and they were planning their various fun times for 2015. The volunteers put a lot of effort into providing various restaurants, movie times and entertainments. Lists are sent around for them to choose those dates each lady is interested in. This club is not just for single, widowed, divorced gals but also those with husbands who don’t care to go to lunches, movies, etc. I came away realizing how fortunate we are in Oak Run to have something for everyone, no matter your state in life. I was also impressed that at the end of the year they give a donation to Interfaith. I wish you continued success in all your planning. Ladies and a Happy 2015.

I love the following article – another new club. This is definitely one that I want to take part in, giving back to our community. Before I end I want to point out that this is the season for giving and many Oak Runners are very generous. We all need to keep those less fortunate in our minds. We have great organizations such as Interfaith, Brother’s Keepers, Salvation Army, various church food pantries and Community with a Heart to name a few. Give a little and you will feel a lot, of good that is. Happy shopping! Laura

Another new club

A new club is being formed at Oak run, “Give Back to the Community.” It is not just our Oak Run community but a far reaching community. The function of the club will be to make items for the hospital, hospice and nursing home patients along with other needy members of our community. If you enjoy sewing, knitting, crocheting, or just lending a helping hand, you will want to join this special group. The first meeting is on Thursday, Jan. 8 at the Island Club and meetings will be on the second Thursday of each month from noon to 3 p.m. Would you not enjoy being part of the fun of helping others? For additional information, call Diane at 352-873-3471.

“Hoofin” It for Hospice Final News Report

On a brisk Florida fall morning, many Oak Runners gathered to walk in our annual “Hoofin It for Hospice” event. These wonderful folks brought their donations, which totaled over $1,000, and their walking shoes as they took a short trip around a course that meandered through Eagles Point. They returned to Palm Grove and enjoyed breakfast of bagels, muffins, coffee, and fruit which were donated by Bagelicious, Walmart and Publix. The “Hoofin” event is ORHA sponsored and all the monies raised go directly to Hospice of Marion County’s Legacy House located just outside our main gate. This year we raised over $11,600 which included donations from a “Cowboy and Boots Dance” held the night before. The donations from the dance were from ticket sales, the 50/50, and door prizes donated by Panera’s. We were extremely happy that four of the fantastic ladies that work at Legacy House were able to make our event this year.

Obviously, it takes a lot of people to make an event like this a success and as in years past, there were a number of volunteers that helped make this year’s “Hoofin” another success. There are too many to name, but significant recognition does go to Andrew and Inga Crane and Damian and Audrey Romano for their continuing efforts for this annual ORHA sponsored event. They along with Hospice’s Legacy House and ORHA wish to thank each of you that donated so generously to this worthwhile cause. God Bless and see you next year.

Christmas golf cart parade

This is a reminder…..

What are you doing on Wednesday, Dec. 17? Santa and Mrs. Claus are coming to Oak Run to see all of their “children (that includes the big ones and the little ones)” that evening. If you have a golf cart, motorcycle, bicycle, car or truck, and want to decorate same for this event, please call Damian at 352-854-4840 and come to the Orchid Club overflow parking lot no later than 6:30 on that Wednesday. The parade route is from the Orchid Club overflow parking lot, down the blvd. to Palm Grove. The warm up will be at around 7:15 where there will be entertainment, refreshments and goodies for all. The only possibility for cancellation is rain; the reception will be held regardless of the weather. There will not be a makeup date. We especially want to invite those families and friends that are visiting our wonderful community during this holiday season to join in the festivities. Santa is filling his cart with Christmas goodies for all the little and big boys and girls who have been good this year, and hopefully that includes you!!!!

Well folks, another week and I hope it is a good one for you. This is a season of peace so be at peace with another. Until next week , Laura Smith csjtpq@deccacable.com
