Meet some of Oak Run's volunteers

-A A +A
By Carol Ann Wheeler

The coordinator of volunteers who donate their time at the TimberRidge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center will be interviewed on Ev Burg’s Meeting People on Channel 12, starting May 16 at 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. daily following FYI.

Their discussion will center on the myriad of work which the volunteers participate in and how free time can truly be put to good use by helping the residents who call TimberRidge their home for a short or extended time.

Canine Club

The Canine Club will meet at the Island Club on Thursday, May 22 at 7 p.m. The guest speaker will be Tish Hennessy from All Creatures Sanctuary and three dogs from their Canines in Crisis program.

We ask that attendees be mindful of our speaker’s severe asthmatic condition and not wear deodorant, hair spray, cologne, perfume, etc.

Kudos to Bev Moreau for an outstanding, off the chart, extremely successful Pet Meals on Wheels yard sale. Through her guidance and hard work we were able to “reach the stars” in sales.

Our profitability was due to the tremendous team effort. Thanks to the donors of an assortment of articles that had immense appeal to just about everyone.

Thanks to the industrious workers prior to, during and after the sale. Also an important thank you to the patrons.

OMI Club

On June 5 we are featuring Fools Gold for movie night and it comes with Lee’s Chicken, fresh popcorn, and ice cream. Tickets are $8 members and $10 guests and go on sale May 22 and 29 in the Orchid Club lobby from 9 to 11 a.m.

We are also selling tickets on those dates for our annual Orange Blossom Opry trip Sept. 26, with a dinner stop at Stonecrest Country Club. Cost is $42 per person.

Our annual golf outing was last month with 70 members and guests enjoying a round of golf and lunch. Each group played their own game but all participated in the closest to the pin contest.

We will be take a break from festivities in July and August and would like to wish every member a safe summer.

The annual OMI and Baytree Green bowling challenge was at AMF West on May 6. Tom Gouza 750 and Jeanne DePalma 596 won the high series. First place Tom Gouza and Marge Rymarcsuk, Matt Vuolo and Mary Anspacher 2, Nick Cavalluzzi and Jeanne DePalma 3, Duke Misener and Charlene Stojkic 4, Carol Stockslager and Bill Lucia 5.

Thanks to Doris Holt, Mary Anspacher, Marge Rymarcsuk and Charlene Stojkic for all the desserts. And thanks to the 44 people who came to bowl and have a good time. Best part – OMI won the challenge and took home the trophy.

New York Club

At the picnic (great time had by all) Bonnie and Bill Carr won two tickets to the May dance. Thanks to the volunteers who helped setup and cleanup.

The Denims and Diamonds dinner dance May 28 will be the last until September. Cost for members $14, guests $16, BYOB. For tickets, call Jeanne at 854-1172.

Doors open at 6 and dinner at 6:30 p.m. Chicken Marsala, fixings and “garlic knots” plus cheesecake. Tom Michaels, a favorite, will keep us dancing.

If you lived in New York, join this wonderful club by calling Jack Foggan at 237-9489. Keep your club in touch with members who need a kind word through our Sunshine Gal, Ginny Emerick at 854-5120.

Carol Ann’s Corner

Okay folks, as they say in parts of the South, “You’re not talking at me.” I know that it’s getting warmer. I know Snowbirds are flying North but stuff has to be going on in a place as big as Oak Run.

There are some health and safety activities that deserve more attention. I have taken the AARP driver safety program every three years since I arrived in Oak Run in 1995.

This is an excellent course that will give you all sorts of useful driving tips for your safety and that of others. Also, remember that traffic laws do vary slightly from state to state. You may have been driving exactly as prescribed in your home state but you might be surprised at what Florida law says about various situations.

In addition, auto insurance companies give a discount to drivers who have taken this course. Call Bart at 861-6698 for more information.

We all know that controlling blood pressure is very important for our health. You may be taking your BP at the store and at your physician’s office but, in between, why not have it taken by nurses at the Medical Team’s blood pressure checks? Come to the card room Wednesday, May 21, from 8:30 and 11 a.m. and keep track of this most important health statistic.

Here’s a final health-related thought: Depression is merely anger without enthusiasm.

Royal Oaks Women’s

18-hole Golf League

On Tuesday, May 6, league members were able to throw out two holes, one each on the front and back. The problem though, we had to decide which holes to throw out before play.

Flight 1: Judie Lavdas 54, Pat Blackburn and Sylvia Zappia 56.

Flight 2: Dianna Love 52, Noreen Salo 54, Janet Tully, 56.

Flight 3: Kitty Trichel 48, Carol Copp 54.

Joy Thomas was closest to the pin.

Royal Oaks Lady Niners

On Thursday, May 8, the Lady Niners played the season closing scramble. It was a lot of fun and results were very close.

There was a tie for the first place team; Jeannie Konicki, Bette Johnson, Maureen Casner, Joyce Madill and of Claire Pruneau, Vicki Ellin, Diana Schmidt, Patty Waddell.

Following the scramble there was a club meeting. Awards were presented to low gross champion Bette Johnson, low net champion Margie Dunegan, and improved player Bette Johnson. Birdie pins were awarded to several members.

New officers were elected for the new season: President Bette Johnson, Vice President Ilene Simnowitz, co-Treasurers Sheila Weckstein and Joyce Madill, Secretary Patty Waddell.

Members thank this past season’s officers for their hard work and commitment to the club: President Jan Washenko, Vice President Ilene Simnowitz, co-Treasurers Bette Johnson and Arlene Massa, Secretary Rae Stover.

The group enjoyed a luncheon together where Ilene Simnowitz had cleverly decorated the tables and gave travel-related gifts as place cards.

The official season is over but we’re still playing every Monday and Thursday. We will miss our Snowbirds – have safe trips and a great summer.
