Happy New Year

By Diane Bress

The new year is here and we’re ready to get busy and get the ball rolling. Bocce will resume on Monday, Jan. 4, at 9:30 a.m.; the popular card game Hand & Foot is played at 1 p.m.; and the Stretch and Tone exercise group will continue to meet on Mondays and Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. in the Lifestyle Center. Our bowling leagues resume with No-Tap at 12:30 p.m.; and on Wednesday, Jan. 6, Line Dancing is practiced in the Lifestyle Center at 2 p.m. These are just a few of the many activities scheduled, so please check the listing printed on the reverse side of the monthly calendar inserted into your January Communicator. We are always looking for new things to do. Anyone interested in forming a group or leading an activity should contact the Activities Office to discuss reserving a time on the calendar.

Tuesday coffee socials
You’re invited to join fellow residents each Tuesday morning in the Lifestyle Center for the Tuesday morning Social. Doors open at 8 a.m. and a volunteer group serves coffee and donuts to all residents who come down to socialize with friends and neighbors; then at 9 a.m., our volunteer M.C. calls the program to order. We recognize resident birthdays and anniversaries; welcome any visitors, and ask new residents to introduce themselves. Activities and program highlights are reviewed, and group representatives come up to invite others to lunches, shows, and events happening in the community. Often the captain from the MCSO SR 200 office updates us on the happenings in the SR200 corridor and how to stay safe and secure. On the third Tuesday, there is a guest speaker, and various topics are covered. Won’t you join us? Coffee and donuts are free on the first Tuesday of the month. We’d love to see you there.

Celebrity Impression show Jan. 17
Impressionist, singer and performer Sally Langwah, along with her husband Roy Langwah, will be bringing us another favorite celebrity impression show to Marion Landing on Sunday, Jan. 17, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in the Lifestyle Center. “Sally’s Vegas Buddies” show includes impressions of such Vegas legends as Marilyn, Cher, Patsy, Reba, to name just a few. Roy will also appear as Willie Nelson. Sally’s 3½ vocal octave range enables her to perform over 40 vocal impressions of popular superstars. Tickets to this wonderful show are $6 each and are on sale in the Activities Office and at the Tuesday Socials. Be sure to get your tickets—you’re sure to have a very entertaining afternoon.

New Painting class
Our next painting class is scheduled to begin Monday, Jan. 4, and you may still participate if you are interested. This is a six-week, two-hour class which will be held each Monday morning in the Craft Room. The class is for new students who wish to learn the fundamentals of painting as well as those who would like studio time with instructor guidance. The instructor, Connie Ferreira, will lead you through the creative process or provide help to the more advanced students. If you would like to take this class, come down to the Craft Room on Monday at 10 a.m. Students should bring a 11x14 or 16x20 canvas to class and a photograph of something real for their painting.

Singles Club
The Marion Landing Singles Club, also known as the Prime Timers, would like to invite anyone interested in getting to know other singles to come to an organizational meeting on Friday, Jan. 22, at 11 a.m. in the Lifestyle Center. Men and women of Marion Landing are invited to join in and share ideas for the club and how we can get together help each other with our daily lives, as well as plan some educational, informational and enjoyable activities.

Leland Games
Leland Management, Marion Landing’s management company, will be holding the First Leland Games from Jan. 11 through 15. Somewhat similar to our Senior Games, the Leland Games will include five communities and are a way for the participating communities to showcase their facilities and talents, help build comradery and have some fun. Marion Landing will be hosting the Bowling competition of the Games on Friday, Jan. 15, at 9 a.m. Other games that will be hosted by other communities include Pickleball, Table Tennis, Billiards, Spelling Bee, and an on-line Photography contest. You received a flyer enclosed in your December Communicator telling you a little about the events and the communities which are hosting them, and we are looking for residents to participate in each of these events. We are hoping for a good representation of Marion Landing. There are only a limited number of spots open, so if you are interested in participating in any of these games, please contact me as soon as you can to register.

Super Bowl Party
This year’s Super Bowl Party will be held on Sunday, Feb. 7, and the doors will open at 6 p.m. The menu will be hot dogs, sauerkraut and fixin’s, meatballs, honey wings, lots of snacks, ice, coffee and cake. The game will be shown on TV and the big screen in front of the stage in the Lifestyle Center. Tickets are $6 and will go on sale Jan. 12 at the Tuesday morning Social and in the Activities Office. The number of tickets to be sold is limited, so get your tickets early.
