Making the outdoor colorful during the season

-A A +A
By Fiona Blair

Hello readers: At last! Spring into Summer… it is joyful to see our residents enjoying the outdoors, digging in the dirt and planting colorful floras that will bloom into beautiful blossoms, as well as adding this and that to assist Mother Nature in ‘greening-up’ our lawns! Boy, do we need rain! Enjoy the fruits of your hard labor, for it is a job well done and the rewards are many for yourselves and those who visit Palm Cay. We have a wonderful community and are so blessed.

We say a warm goodbye to those who leave for the summer. Be safe on your journey northward, and enjoy reacquainting yourselves with friends and loved ones. We shall look forward to your return in the autumn.

A reminder note: Please be sure to give your emergency information to your Block Representative or your CERT contact. They are listed in the front of the Palm Cay phone directory. There is an information sheet available in the Palm Cay Sun. Make sure your home is safe and there are no prospective projectiles lying on the patio or porch. If you have difficulty with lifting items, or other problems, please be sure to contact a neighbor or friend. Tuck everything away - after all, hurricane season is just around the corner!  We want you to return to us and have your home intact. God bless.

Pancake Breakfast May 16

It’s that time again! The Oasis is the place. Saturday, May 16 from 7:30 to 10 a.m.  at a cost of $3 where breakfast is served. Charming hosts, Russ and Julie Hoyt sign you in and scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausage, juice and coffee await. Wonderful wait-staff seat you and the piece de resistance – some lucky person will win a $25 Gift card to Walmart! Wow!

Blood Drive May 20

A reminder that the Big Red Bus will grace the parking lot at the Oasis from 8 a.m. until noon for those who are able to donate blood. This life-giving donation is so desperately needed and a huge ‘thank you’ to those who give regularly. If you are a newcomer to Palm Cay, and you would like to share in this service, bring your driver’s license, fill out some paperwork and be blessed for your donation. Also, another benefit provides the opportunity to meet and share in conversation and refreshments with fellow residents.

Wednesday Night Social May 20

The parking lot at the Oasis will be a busy place as residents join together for the Wednesday Night Social on May 20 at 7p.m. with a cost of $2. “Summer Springs Chorus”, an all female group who sing in the ‘barber shop’ style of harmony, will provide the entertainment. The director is Judi Styger. They appeared at the Oasis in 2007 and the audience loved them. Refreshments follow. From anyone who enjoys baking and would like to provide a dessert, it would be gratefully received. Call Nancy Solomon for more information if needed.

Gabby Hatters

The monthly meeting of the Palm Cay Gabby Hatters was on Friday, April 24. Queen Mother, Lois Barber, opened our meeting and read a prayer. She also read a poem by cookbook author, Zola Gorgon. Charlotte Steif gave the treasury report.  Pia Pellicano read an article entitled, “How to Lock Your Car and Why”, which was very informative. Jane Grames was welcomed as a new member. After the meeting, the group went to Lorenzo’s Kuchina for lunch! Submitted by Pia Pellicano

Republican Club

The meeting for May 14 has been cancelled. The next meeting will be on Thursday, June 11,  at 7 p.m. If you need information, please contact Jim Pettus whose number is in the Palm Cay directory.

In respect

This writer was contacted by a resident who wished to pay tribute to one of Palm Cay’s own who passed away recently. Frank Gabrial was a man of quiet humility. One would see him in the hot tub or the shallow end of the pool walking from side to side in order to strengthen his leg muscles. He was a wonderful neighbor to Ms. Waddell, his neighbor and friend, and telephoned her every day to make sure she was okay, even when he was out of town. We pay our respects to him for his military service in the Korean War where he earned a Purple Heart. Rest in Peace, Frank.

Until next time…..

May you enjoy the beauty of God’s work unfold as spring enters summer.

There is box in the library at the Oasis for residents to place their newsy tidbits, group activity information, travels, etc. Fiona Blair is listed in the Palm Cay directory or e-mail to fiona-blair@hotmail.com.
