The Relay for Life for our part of Marion County is set for next weekend, May 1 and 2. Former and current cancer patients, their families, businesses, civic organizations, and the public are invited to take part in this event.

Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s version of an athletic relay, but with a new twist. Relay For Life is a family-oriented event where participants enjoy the camaraderie of a team and also raise funds to support the activities of the American Cancer Society. Participants camp out at the Relay site, and when they are not taking their turn walking, they take part in fun activities and enjoy local entertainment.

Teams from companies, churches, organizations, hospitals, and schools collect donations and can win individual and team prizes for their efforts.

As the date of the event moves closer, we urge new participation.

Form a team and take part in the Relay.

Take a few hours Friday night and go to the high school and be there as the candles are lit in the luminaria.

Call the American Cancer Society’s local office and make a donation to one of the teams.

Those who take part say that participation in the Relay for Life is a life-changing experience.

For many people, one of the most moving parts of the night is the Ceremony of Hope, where the night is brightened by the glow of the luminaria.

You, too, can help spread the light of hope and honor or remember those in your life who have been touched by this disease. Your contribution will help save lives, give hope, and empower people through the American Cancer Society and its lifesaving mission.

For more information about how to form a team, place a luminaria in honor of a cancer survivor or victim, or become involved in other areas of the Relay For Life, call 352-629-4727 ext. 5823 or visit www.marionrelay.com

Relay For Life takes place from 5 p.m. on Friday, May 1 until mid-morning on Saturday, May 2 at West Port High School.

Consider the opportunity to keep the Light of Hope burning brightly.
