Members of the Ocala Big Sun Chorus are off to a brand “New Year” with much to look forward to and so much to be grateful for.

Stella and Peter (that’s me) Musella are happy to be home in sunny Ocala after “dashing through the snow” and slush – in four-part harmony – celebrating Christmas with our children and grandchildren (9). We even tolerated the gloomy cold weather in New York, New Jersey, Long Island, and Brooklyn to be with family during the Christmas holidays.

Gloria Hayes, wife of Roland Hayes, is recuperating at home after a prolonged stay in the hospital. Members of the Big Sun Chorus wish Gloria a speedy recovery.

In Loving Memory

It’s hard to understand why people are suddenly taken from us. The death of longtime barbershopper and chorus member George King saddened all who knew him. He died in December 2008, and we will all miss his wry sense of humor.

The Big Sun Barbershop chorus had a memorial to celebrate his life. George was 81 years old on Dec. 14, 2008, and had been a barbershopper nearly 50 of those years.

In 1986, he was honored as Barbershopper of the Year, and the award was proudly displayed on the living room wall of his Oak Run home. In addition to supporting the barbershoppers’ creed of musically educating youths and “keeping the whole world singing,” George was often seen on Oak Run’s channel 12, reading the news for the visually impaired.

George retired after 40 years as a buyer for a major Chicago department store.

He attended many local charity functions in the Ocala area in the company of Marie D’Eugenio, one of his closest friends. Mr. King is survived by a daughter, Laurie Scott, and a son, Warren King, both of Wisconsin.

On Dec. 10, the Good Vibrations quartet sang a “Welcome to Florida” performance for Dick and Marianne Messner, formerly of Pennsylvania and now residents of the Villages. This very special request was made by their children, Dolores and Jack Cullen, who still live in Pa.

The Cullens are longtime friends of Jim Francis, bass in the quartet. The Messners were thrilled by the quartet’s harmonious welcome, and wanted to express their thanks by inviting the barbershoppers to dinner.

Of course, all this came as a complete surprise to Dick and Marianne.
