It could be your neighbor

A South Marion Citizen editorial

The Sheriff’s Office came out with its annual list of sex predators and sex offenders last week. The booklet lists 648 violators with their photos and home addresses, all of which are public record.
Although, fortunately, we didn’t recognize anyone I knew, it did make for some interesting reading.
The violators are broken down by Zip Code, which makes comparison of the areas quite easy.
As an aside, it also shows how ridiculous the Zip Code designations are, with adjacent Zip Code numbers at opposite ends of the county, and two different Zip Codes for the County Jail. That, of course, is a postal service problem.
Of the 648 violators, 25 are currently in jail, 16 are women, and the vast majority are white males.
Looking at the breakdown by Zip Codes, the ones with more than 30 violators include Citra, Ocklawaha, Belleview, Dunnellon, and the Shores area. There is one northwest area that has a large number, but about half its list includes people in the county jail.
Some Zips have only one or two people listed, but that is misleading, because it is mostly the Zip Codes that are shared with another county.
Supposedly the list is accurate, but we’re a little nervous about printing specific addresses of anyone, because we are such a mobile society.
There are 15 people listed in the Zip Code serving much of our area, 34481.
If you go to http://www.marionso.com/main.php which is the sheriff’s website, there are links enabling you to search for the offenders and predators in your area.
For the protection of you and your family, you should familiarize yourself with the names and addresses, and pictures, of anyone listed in your family’s area.
