How long has it been since you’ve attended a tea? Or have you ever? Well then, here’s your chance.

On Saturday, Feb. 14, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. you are invited to the Friends Valentine Tea Membership Drive in the community meeting room. Members, patrons, and the just curious are all welcome.

Come enjoy some goodies and refreshments, and find out what The Friends are all about. Have some goodies and refreshments, and find out what The Friends are all about. Kermit and Cindy Clark will provide live music on keyboard and guitar.

Members will be on hand to answer questions, explain what we do and why we exist. It may not be what you think.

New Photography Display

Freedom Public Library is proud of its new photo exhibit. The Shutterbugs of On Top of the World have arranged 12 black-framed pictures along the office walls and around the column next to the Reference Desk.

“All the photographs we show were taken by our members,” says Norbert Sachs, the group’s display director. “We plan to rotate them out every two months. A selection committee of three members will select twelve to fourteen different photos for each display.”

The club began in 2005 with about 30 members. “Today we have 70,” says Sachs. “Their experience ranges from novice to master photographer, using all kinds of camera equipment, from the basic point-and-shoot to the more sophisticated SLRs.”

The club also plans to display in On Top of the World’s Master the Possibilities Education Center in February. They have been invited to show in several other locations along the Corridor.

The Creative Memories Scrapbookers have established their regular 2009 meeting day as the second Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. unless otherwise notified. Anyone who likes to scrap, whether beginner or experienced, is invited to attend.

Did you know the Scrapbookers leader, Karen David, is also The Friends’ library historian? About a year ago she accepted the daunting task of separating and organizing a mountain of clippings and pictures.

She has completed Volume I of The Friends of Freedom Public Library Heritage Album and is now working on Volume II. Both books will soon be available for all to see.

“I truly do enjoy scrap booking, and I enjoy sharing ideas with the class,” says Karen. “I wish to thank all the members of The Friends for this wonderful opportunity to be the library historian.”

And thank you, Karen, for an exceptionally fine record of the library’s activities.

Coming in February

from The Friends

On Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 2 p.m., The Friends will present guest speakers from the Community Relations department of the Sheriff’s Office.

Terrie Hardison, executive director of the Alzheimer’s and Dementia Alliance for Education and Support, will speak on dementia and Alzheimer’s, and how to recognize the difference. “An estimated 11,455 cases of Alzheimer’s currently exist in Marion County,” says Hardison, “And the number is growing. Education and preparation are essential, not only as caregivers but also as potential sufferers.”

Cindy Irving, crisis intervention specialist, will have available stainless steel “Extra Special Person” (ESP) bracelets for Alzheimer’s patients. These bracelets are engraved with the sheriff’s office address and 24-hour phone number, 732-9111. Patients can even have their photographs on file with that office if they wish.

Book Discussion Group

The selected book for discussion Friday, Feb. 20, from 1 to 2 p.m. will be “A Thousand White Women” by Jim Fergus. Then from 2 to 3 p.m., their ongoing discussion of “A Team of Rivals” by Doris Kearns Goodwin continues with chapters 5, 6, and 7.
