Friday Forum to discuss storms

-A A +A

Hurricane season doesn’t start until June 1 but the National Weather Service has declared this Hurricane Preparedness Week to make sure people give themselves enough time to put a plan in place to protect both their family and property from the effects of a potential natural disaster.

Erin Miller , Deputy Director of Emergency Management in the Sheriff’s Office, will discuss local preparedness efforts and disaster relief when the May 12 Friday Forum of Marion County meets at 11:30 a.m. at the Golden Corral, 2111 SW State Road 200, Ocala.

She will be joined by two representatives from the Marion County Public Schools - Dennis McFatten, Safe Schools Coordinator, and Steve Huffstutler, Emergency Coordinator and Risk Inspector.

Just because we are in the center of state don’t think we can’t be seriously impacted by nature’s major weather events.

Four major hurricanes tore through Central Florida in 2004 and tornadoes caused death and devastation in Lady Lake in 2007 and damaged 60 homes in Oak Run in 2015 .

If you experienced these or similar events here or elsewhere, please come to share your experiences and advice with a few of the 42,000 new residents who have moved into Marion County since 2004, some of whom may not fully understand the impact such an event might have upon our community.
