Summer is right around the corner.

And, to get parents and children prepared for it, the 2nd Annual Kids Summer Safety Fair is set for May 30.

The event, sponsored by Single Parent 2 Single Parent, Marion County Children’s Alliance and Safe Kids of Marion County, gives families an opportunity to learn about local summer programs and safety tips.

In addition, the free event will give parents and children the opportunity to learn through different interactive safety demonstrations like a children’s self-defense class by Martial Arts World.

“They will also receive safety devices and also educational materials,” said Amy Gallaher, support organizer of Single Parent 2 Single Parent. For instance, the first 100 children to the Epilepsy Foundation table will get fitted for a bicycle helmet and the Florida Masonic Child ID program is doing identification cards for kids. St. John’s River Water Management will do drinking water safety and other activities.

Some other activities for the children include face painting and balloon animals by Ocala Clown Express, crafts at the Artist Hub of Ocala, and a bounce house courtesy of Aviant Party Rentals. The Early Learning Coalition will pass out books to the children.

The safety fair will have free hot dogs provided by Winn Dixie of Marion Oaks and entertainment by Ocala’s Premiere DJ, who will play kids songs from Disney and Nickelodeon. There will also be free raffles at the event, with prizes from Martial Arts World and Easy Street Family Fun Center, among others

Summer programs

Groups like the Girl Scouts, Boys and Girls Club and the Boy Scouts Troop 18 will also be on hand to discuss their organizations, as well as summer programs. In addition, representatives of Sylvan Learning Center, the YMCA, Marion County Parks and Recreation and Marion County Public Library will be at the fair to discuss their programs.

There will be more than 20 organizations and businesses represented at the fair.

The 2nd Annual Kids Summer Safety Fair will be on May 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Journey Fellowship in Marion Crossing Shopping Center behind McDonald’s. The shopping center is on County 484 near Interstate 75. The event is free. For more information, contact Amy at 207-3570 or sparent2sparent@yahoo.com.
