Sheriff's cruiser hits, kills horse

A Marion County deputy was seriously injured early Wednesday when his patrol car struck a horse.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Deputy Matthew Bowers was driving south on 80th Avenue, near the intersection of Southwest 38th Street, in emergency mode at about 1:30 a.m.

A dark colored horse was standing in the roadway, and Bowers was unable to see him as he traveled south. The front right of he patrol vehicle struck the horse.

Following impact, the horse landed on the southbound shoulder. The patrol car rotated clockwise and stopped on the shoulder.

According to the report, Bowers sustained “somewhat serious” injuries and was taken to Munroe Regional Medical Center.

The horse was fatally injured.

The road was closed for approximately one hour.
