Fifty-six golfers competed for prize money, hole prizes and raffle prizes Saturday, Feb. 21, at Lake Diamond Golf and Country Club. Paul Preuit, Mike Attard, Rick McKnight and Mike Clubb won the $300 first place prize with a sterling 6 under par on each side and a final score of 60 at the second annual Air Force Association chapter 136 tournament.

No one managed to earn the coveted $10,000 hole in one prize on hole 15. However nearly as amazing a feat was the drive by Mike Clubb on the 314-yard par-4 hole 16. He landed the drive in the middle of the green and made the 15-foot putt for an eagle.

That two-point advantage was the difference between first and the second place team of Ron Head, Tom Wilson, Roger Olayos and El Black who finished with 6 under on the front, but 4 under on the back for a final score of 62.

Third place was a tie between the team of Dr. Tom Harter, Brett Hermann, Jim Alerron, and Brenda Carroll; and the team of Don Bostick, Randy Blocker, Ty Parker and Jim Duckett. Both teams were 9 under par at 63.

Kuntry Boys BBQ served a delicious buffet style lunch of pulled pork, chicken, baked beans, twice baked potatoes, slaw and iced tea. Dessert of oatmeal cookies baked by Margie Fleming and a sheet cake baked by Rosamarie Clark complemented the meal and provided a great way to celebrate and to forget what might have been on hole 15.

Hole sponsorship of $50 donations were provided by Dr. Harter’s Dentistry, Oscar’s Auto Repair, Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs, Lile’s Collision Service, Civil Air Patrol, political candidate John Deakins, Greiners Men’s and Women’s Wear, Robin and the Giant, Dan Fake and Jill Schulte, and VFW Post 4493 of Candler. Jane Fontaine and Associates, Hank Wittier of Vets Serving Vets, and BonenClark Equine each donated $100 for hole sponsorship.

Many participants benefited from the gifts by community supporters for hole and raffle prizes. Winn-Dixie at Maricamp and Pine: two $10 gift certificates. IHOP on Pine Avenue: two meals. Bob Evans on S.R. 200: two meals. Wal-Mart: $100 gift certificate.
