Benefit for needy family

John and Ruth Sherman wanted to help people for years, but they weren’t sure how to do it.

In June 2008, it started to come together.

The couple came up with the idea of “Jacked Up For a Cause.”

On Saturday, March 28, they will hold their first truck, car, Jeep, and bike show benefiting a local family in need.

The event, which will be at Triple Crown Plaza on S.R. 200, will have entertainment, fingerprinting by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Teen to Teen TV, raffles and an assortment of vehicles. The Shermans are hoping to have 100 to 150 entries in the show with each paying $15 per entry. The winners in each category will receive a trophy.

The goal of the Shermans is to help a family that has recently fallen on hard times and might be hesitant to ask for help.

“A lot of people have that pride issue,” said Ruth. The couple found themselves in a similar situation more than a decade ago. In 1995, their first child was diagnosed with a heart condition.

“I’d leave it in God’s hands,” Ruth recalled the doctor saying. The infant died a few days after birth.

Then, about two weeks later, John caught his wedding ring on a delivery truck and lost two fingers. He was unable to work and the family spent six months trying to make it through with the help of family. But, after a while, something had to give. Though they did not want to ask for assistance, they had to.

So years after asking for help, the owners of Sherman’s High Maintenance Lawn Service have found a way to give back.

They have invested about $3,000 of their own money to the non profit idea and  have also relied on the support of the community, churches, law enforcement and businesses.

In addition, the organization will be holding a monthly cruise-in beginning in April at the Lowe’s on S.W. 95th Street Road. There will be a $1 charge for each vehicle entry.

The Jacked Up for a Cause event will be Saturday, March 28 from 1 to 6 p.m. at Triple Crown Plaza off S.R. 200, 11100 S.W. 93rd Court Road. For more information about the organization, contact jackedup4acause@ yahoo. com. A family will be chosen to receive the money before the day of the event.
