  • Dawn had one more surprise

    She really didn’t see it coming. But not like a year ago when she was shot five times during a bungled burglary and left paralyzed. Her recent moment in the spotlight was not about her tragedy, but rather about her triumph.

    Last Friday, Dawn was a special guest on Live with Regis and Kelly’s Mom’s Dream Come True show. Out of thousands of letters, she was one of four mothers chosen for the annual Mother’s Day special. Her husband Sgt. 1st Class Michael Weiss wrote a heart-rending letter to the show explaining what his wife meant to him and to their family.

  • Check out ?charities? before you give

    I am often asked about telephone solicitations from various “charities.” Some charities claim to support various groups such as “fallen police widows” or “firefighter’s widows.”

    People want to help but how can you be sure the charity is legitimate? I found some tips from the National Consumers League that might help.

    If you are approached by an unfamiliar charity check it out. Most states require charities to register with the Better Business Bureau and require reports on their fundraising efforts and how that money is used.

  • Old-fashioned democracy in action

    One of the great joys the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage and Yours Truly indulge in is attending our grandchildren’s softball games. The downside to all of this is being forced to watch other grandparent’s grandchildren play. Not to say they are not good, however, they do not quite measure up to our grandchildren. It is not their fault. After all, children cannot pick their grandparents.

  • Wings golf tourney ready to take off

    Just down the road apiece Preservist Bud Haedike, vice president of Wings of Freedom Aviation Museum, is promoting a campaign to raise funds to build an aviation museum which will preserve the history of military aviation, honor our veterans, and generate revenue at Dunnellon Airport.

    The Wings of Freedom is having its annual golf tournament fundraiser at Spruce Creek Golf Course, on State Road 200, three miles southwest of C.R. 484, on Saturday, May 31.

  • Running out of gas on road to ruin

    Plainly speaking, our government is clearly out of control in so many ways it’s not even funny. A lot of our real enemies are in Washington, D.C. Their actions daily are causing America to self-destruct. We are borrowing $2 billon a day from our enemy, China, to support our economy so the public won’t know how bad the current recession really is.

    If China wanted America to collapse, all they and the other creditors such as Japan would have to do is to call in our loans and notes. We could never pay up.
