  • Man, 95, killed crossing highway

    A 95-year-old man was killed Tuesday when the scooter he was riding was struck by a pickup truck in Ocala.
    Richard W. Field of Ocala was riding a personal mobility device at 12:12 p.m. when it was struck by a 2007 Chevy truck driven by 26-year-old Edward McDaniel III of Belleview at the intersection of SW 44th Court and State Road 200, according to the Ocala Police Department.

  • LPGA event may be gone

    The LPGA Tour has been making an early-season stop in Ocala for each of the last two years, but a third year appears to be in jeopardy.
    The tour said last Tuesday that the Coates Golf Championship will not take place at Golden Ocala Golf and Equestrian Club in 2017. The club is owned by R+L Carriers, a freight-shipping company that is the presenting sponsor of the event.
    Coates Golf will also not return as title sponsor of the event despite signing a three-year deal to have their name on the event.

  • Re-election possible for Blair

    When election time rolls around on Aug. 30, suspended Marion County Sheriff Chris Blair could still be on the ballot, and could still be elected.
    Supervisor of Elections Wesley Wilcox, at the Memorial Day event at Veterans Park, was asked if Blair could be elected, and answered simply “yes.”
    As of Wednesday, Blair is still listed as “active, prefiled” on the elections website.
    He would have to qualify in July to get on the primary ballot in August.

  • New sheriff in town; that's no puzzle

    It was Saturday, the second of two brutal news days in which we saw a sheriff suspended, a new one appointed, and two sheriff’s officials put on paid leave.
    I had spent much of the day working on the story you see on the front page that was first posted on our website. When it got to be 4 o’clock, I collapsed into my recliner and turned on the Mets game.

  • Changes at the Sheriff's Office

    Marion County has a new sheriff after Chris Blair was suspended following his indictment on perjury charges, and he has already started to clean house.
    Late Friday afternoon, it was announced that Blair had been arrested and bonded out about an hour earlier.

  • Two die in OTOW shooting

    A possible murder-suicide in On Top of the World had the community on edge for a while Thursday morning.
    Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) deputies were dispatched to 8747 SW 93rd Place in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival, deputies discovered
    June Jackson, 60, on her neighbor’s front lawn suffering from a gunshot wound. Jackson was immediately transported to the hospital and was later pronounced dead.

    The State Road 200 Coalition will hold its monthly meeting on Monday, May 9, at 1 p.m. at the Collins Center, TimberRidge Building 5000, Suite 5001.
    School Board and superintendent candidates have been invited.
