  • Hernando murder suspect arrested 04-01-2011

    The suspect in a homicide that occurred in Hernando last week has been arrested on a second-degree murder charge.

    Arthir Neil Sputa Jr., 48, was released Thursday from Tampa General Hospital and transported to the Citrus County Detention Facility in Lecanto where he is being held without bond.

    Sputa was the primary suspect in the investigation of the death of 59-year-old Diane Bartlett, Sputa’s longtime domestic partner.

  • Marion County Sheriff's Reports 04-01-2011

    An armed robbery at a Corridor convenience store about midnight Friday resulted in a suspect avoiding capture.

    According to the Sheriff’s Office, the clerk at the Food Mart, located at 6701 S.W. State Road 200, was accosted by the robber, who pointed a gun at her head after he jumped the counter, and threatened her as she lay on the floor. After he took the money, he left the store and the clerk called 9-1-1.

    Helicopter and canine units were unsuccessful in tracking the suspect, who was still at large as of Tuesday afternoon.

  • Marion County Sheriff's Reports 03-25-2011

    An Ohio man who is a landlord to a tenant on Southwest 151st Place was accused of aggravated battery after an incident at his house.

    According to the report from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Terry Lee Johnston, 26, of Winchester, Ohio, was admitted to the house by someone else to retrieve some items. He reportedly went into the bedroom where the male victim was sleeping and an altercation occurred.

    Deputies arrested Debra Lemily, 48, the bookkeeper at Saddlewood Elementary School, for financial fraud after an auditor identified missing funds from the school's account. Auditors found four checks made payable to Lemily. School officials also discovered she had made false entries in the school's ledger and forged other documents regarding payment to vendors.

     Detectives have been working with school officials and auditors for approximately a month during this investigation.

  • Man killed in brush fire 02-25-2011

    Marion County Fire Rescue firefighters responded to an outside fire at 12025 Northwest Highway 326 Tuesday afternoon. When emergency crews from four stations arrived on scene at 12:47 p.m., they found an area approximately three to five acres engulfed in heavy flames and smoke. While MCFR firefighters worked to quickly extinguish the fire, crews identified a deceased victim in the burn area at 12:59 p.m. The victim was 66-year-old Warren Wimberly.

    An Ocala man was arrested on various charges after incidents at Walmart and Murphy Oil.

    Ronald Wayne Norwood, 22, of Northeast 36th Avenue, allegedly took items and told store employees he was taking them, before leaving the store and walking to Murphy Oil.

  • Third arrest brings felony charge

    A third theft arrest meant a felony charge for a local woman recently.

    Stevie Bell Gibson, 32, of Southwest 136th Lane, Ocala, was arrested at Beall’s on Southwest 114th Street on Friday, Feb. 4 at about 5 p.m.

    According to the sheriff’s report, a loss prevention employee apprehended Gibson when she allegedly left the store “after concealing numerous items in her purse and not paying for them.” The stolen items totaled $286 in value.

    Deputies were called to Southwest 157th Lane in Florida Highlands late on New Year’s Eve, and arrested a man who was a convicted felon.

    Ryan William Edwards 25, of Southwest 156th Place, was accused of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and resisting arrest without violence.

    According to the report, the people at a local house complained that the suspect had approached their house, and later shots were fired toward the house. When deputies arrived, they heard the suspect in the woods behind the house, and then later heard a gunshot.

    A New York man armed with knives and a claw hammer was arrested after he attempted to enter his ex-girlfriend’s home and was captured by a private investigator and another man at the 103rd Lane residence.

    Brian Keith Stebbings, 38, of Huntington, N.Y., as accused of two counts of aggravated assault and aggravated domestic stalking after the incident.
