  • Easter bunny hops to Liberty Park

    They did not have to stay up into the wee hours on Easter Eve hoping to get a glimpse of the Easter bunny. They got a chance to touch and hug him several days before. 

    About 25 local children, gathered at Liberty Community Park on the Tuesday before Easter Sunday to take part in the Brown Bag Bunny Brunch, sponsored by Marion County Parks and Recreation Department. The children, aged two to five, did crafts, played games and collect colorful eggs during the Easter egg hunt, which was hosted by “Mr. Bunny.”

  • Paint Our Town Purple

    The Citizen would like to feature area businesses that plan to participate in the one-day “Paint Our Town Purple” event on April 16, bringing attention to the fight against cancer and the upcoming Relay for Life on May 1 and 2.

    The Citizen camera will take photos of unique displays and one of the most unique or colorful will be on a future page one of the Citizen.

  • Merchant group forms for West Marion business leaders

    With the idea of supporting one another for marketing purposes as well as welcoming new businesses to the area, a group of local merchants has formed the West Marion Business Association.

    Still in the early stages of organization, a goal-setting meeting was held last week to brainstorm how the association could benefit members.

    Among the ideas was to provide a venue for networking, to raise customer knowledge of businesses, and to combine efforts for creative marketing.

    Gunshots erupted on the Corridor early Monday morning as Citrus and Marion County law officers pursued and exchanged fire with a man who was ultimately killed on County Road 484 near Marion Oaks.

  • Local leaders look at stimulus dollars

    Representatives from the Marion County Public School System and Ocala/Marion County Transportation Planning Organization were among the speakers at a recent stimulus plan meeting at Central Florida Community College and sponsored by the Ocala/Marion County Economic Development Corporation. The panel discussed how they plan to spend the government funds once President Barak Obama’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act filters down to Marion County.

  • Time to Paint Our Town Purple

    Purple balloons, purple crepe paper streamers and purple clothes are among the ways that area businesses plan to decorate inside and outside their establishments on Thursday, April 16 to celebrate cancer survivorship and to bring Corridor awareness about the May 1 and 2 Relay for Life at West Port High School.

    The event is a “day of awareness” sponsored by the American Cancer Society.

    Homeowners are also encouraged to participate in the fun day by putting up purple signs on doors or in yards to create a consciousness about both cancer and the Relay for Life.

  • PRETTY IN PAINT

    Children attending the Extended Day program at Hammett Bowen Jr. Elementary School got to take a break from their usual after-school routine and were surprised with an array of fun at the program’s “Spring Fling.”

    About 100 students attended the after-school event, which was educational and fun. The students were divided into two groups and rotated to the various tables of activities set-up in the school’s cafeteria.

  • Lined up early for a free stack

    To support Children’s Miracle Network, the IHOP restaurant at 11100 S.W. 93rd Court Road gave free pancakes to its patrons Feb. 24. Corridor residents took note and were lined up by 7:30 a.m. IHOP suggested a $3 donation to help children with cancer on National Pancake Day.

  • PAINT OUR TOWN PURPLE

    On April 16, West Marion County will be awash in purple, thanks to efforts by volunteers from the American Cancer Society’s annual “Relay for Life,” a community campout against cancer.  Businesses will “paint our town purple” to celebrate cancer survivorship and bring attention to the yearly event, which will be held on May 1 and 2 at West Port High School.
