  • Hospital expansion plans announced

    Ocala Health leadership released details Jan. 7 on a multi-faceted expansion project at West Marion Community Hospital, which will add nearly 42,000 square feet to the 13-year-old facility, meeting a continually growing need for acute care services for residents west of I-75. This expansion, along with the additional 24 patient rooms opened in April 2015, will nearly double the facility’s bed count in approximately two years.

    The project will include expansions to three key areas of the hospital: emergency department, operating rooms, and patient rooms.

  • Deceased veterans honored

    The Quarterly Memorial at Veterans Memorial Park was Jan. 9. Names of veterans who died during the last three months of 2015 were read and a bell was tolled after each name, accompanied by a drum roll. Members of Marine Corps League Detachment 1072, based on State Road 200, provided the readings.

  • Vandals damage school property

    Over the Christmas / winter break, several vandals broke into a storage area owned and used by Marion County Public Schools. The vandals destroyed thousands of dollars in brand new pajamas, prom dresses (some new with tags), books, toys, and children’s clothing that would have benefitted local homeless students. The vandals also discharged fire extinguishers inside the building.

  • Hoofin' It for Hospice at OTOW

      Get those walking shoes ready and limber up those leg muscles and get in shape to do a little two-mile leisurely walk around a few On Top of the World Neighborhoods for the annual Hoofin’ It for Hospice Walk that will benefit Hospice’s Legacy House. This is the 16th year this event has taken place in our community with a huge success each time.
    The event will be held Feb. 6 from the lower level of the Recreation Center at promptly 9 a.m. for registration and the walk will begin after registration has been completed.

  • OTOW Lions fight hunger

    The need for help doesn’t stop after the Holidays. There are still those people who need our help. In conjunction with Lions International, the Ocala On Top of the World Lions will be joining a World Wide Week of Service to fight Hunger and Poverty. We will be collecting Non-Perishable foods at several locations on State Road 200. We hope that the residents will help us fill the shelves at Interfaith so those less fortunate will have food.
    You can drop off your donations at the following locations.

  • No room at shelter for drop-off cats

    Due to necessary renovations to the cat rooms at the animal center, Marion County Animal Services has temporarily suspended intake of owner-surrendered cats. Beginning in January, the cat adoption and stray rooms will be hard hat-only areas as crews work to replace the roofs, and no cats will be able to be housed there for the duration of re-roofing activities.

    Former Gov. Jeb Bush may be languishing in the polls, but he looked and sounded like his old self among faithful Monday afternoon.
    About 400 people crammed into the Circle Square Cultural Center in Ocala’s On Top of the World community for a town hall meeting during which Bush spoke of supporting military veterans, senior citizens, the mentally ill and having the gumption to destroy the country’s most serious terrorist threat.

  • County pushes recycling

    In two short weeks, the festive whirlwind of the wintertime holidays will be over. Many homes will be left with trash bags full of wrapping paper and holiday newspaper ads, a bare and brittle Christmas tree and several strands of burned out lights. But wait, don’t haul this holiday clutter to the garbage can just yet.
    “During the holidays, residents throw away more material than any other time of the year,” Solid Waste director Mike Sims said. “We want to encourage residents to recycle as much of that holiday waste as possible.”
