  • It’s seldom a gloomy day in this backyard

We have lived in Illinois, Arkansas, Arizona and Florida  – and of all the places we have lived in 57 years, we love Ocala the best. It is home to us forever. Every place has its good and bad problems, but so far this is where we want to be.

    Blast from the Past

The feature for this column this time happened 20 years ago. These young ladies went on a one-day cruise. The following is what was written 20 years ago by Harriet Bissen.

  • Vintage airplanes ee" in miniature ee" to fly over OTOW

After reading this announcement, go over to your calendar and put a large colored circle around Saturday, April 25. Why?  This is a day of fun in the sunshine at the On Top of the World’s RC Flying Field where the third annual  Society of Antique Modelers (SAM)  radio control vintage model airplane fly-in will be taking place.

Roving columnist Bob Woods said he was told by the event coordinator, Jerry Asner, that this year’s fly-in has even more SAM members registering.

  • Mother’s Day breakfast just around the corner

Didn’t see anyone from Marion Landing at the SECO annual meeting with the lucky number for that $1,000 check, or even one of those $500 versions. SECO never seems to have a problem … or even an issue … with getting a quorum in case members have to vote on something. There may come a day when our board might want to consider some kind of similar incentive to assure achieving that magical number of residents for a legitimate voting session. Free coffee and donuts would work for me.

  • Ladies get ready for Spring fashion show

The Ladies Luncheon group would like to fill the clubhouse for next month’s luncheon on Wednesday May 13 at noon.  Second Chance Consignment shop will be hosting a Fashion Show.  Please come out and join us.  It will be a great day!

Just bring a covered dish to share

The ladies enjoyed an  Easter egg hunt at the April luncheon.  The door prize was won by Lynn Battis and our 50/50 winners were Norma Briggs, Connie Neubaur and Carol Henn.

  • Eat ice cream and watch the stranger among us

Everyone in Oak Run is invited to attend the Jewish Social Club’s movie and ice cream night, Wednesday, May 6, in the Orchid Club. The movie will be “A Stranger Among Us,” in which a blond schikse detective solves a murder in New York City’s diamond district Hassidic community. Tickets will be on sale Friday, April 24, and Saturday, April 25, from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Orchid Club lobby.

  • Horseshoe pitchers invite others to join their fun

It’s Easter and Passover time. Let’s hope we all, in this free country, worship at our church or synagogue of our choice.

Spruce Creek North’s Horseshoe Pitchers are the featured group for this weeks’ column. Richard Simmons is the chairperson for the Pitchers. At this time there are only six guys. They are a wonderful bunch of fellas .. well most of them anyway. (Just kiddin’ guys).

  • Lumaninarias on sale for Relay to Life

Just down the road apiece Preservists Linda Sprague and Dee Winey, representatives of the Preserve Cancer Support, remind us that the luminaria sale of the American Cancer Society, Dunnellon Relay for Life, Friday, April 17, is now in progress.

Preservists may purchase luminarias for a donation, on Monday from 1 to 3 p.m. and on Tuesday from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m., before bingo, in the Community Center.

This year Preservists may write their loved one’s name and/or message and decorate their loved one’s luminaria if they wish.

  • Mother proud of daughter’s induction into honor society at CFCC

My daughter, Laurie Kedenburg, was inducted into the Kappa Nu Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Society at CFCC March 29. It was held at the Klein Conference Center at CFCC.

This is a great honor for anyone. It’s more so, though, for my daughter who is in her late 40s and never attended college before. She is hearing impaired but has not let it stop her in any way.

  • The Oasis will be a place to take a trip down memory lane, Saturday, April 18.  The Alter Egos present fun, memorable music, good food, 50/50 and a movie ticket drawing all for a donation of $2.  Wow!  Meet your neighbors for a fun-filled evening.
