    CF commencement set

    The College of Central Florida will hold its spring 2014 commencement ceremony at 7 p.m. Friday, May 9, at First Baptist Church of Ocala, 2801 S.E. Maricamp Road. Tickets are not required; however, a large crowd is expected and parking will be limited. Carpooling is encouraged.
    The Distinguished Alumni Award will be presented to Sindy Schneider, class of 1993, who is co-owner of Dance 411 Studios and 411 Productions in Atlanta, which co-produces televised shows for Bravo TV, MTV, Lifetime and NBC.

  • Couple married 75 years

    Gerard and Georgeina Abrahams celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary. Their church, Joy Lutheran, honored them with a luncheon on Sunday, April 27, following worship service in Swenson Hall. They were married, in New York, in 1939, when he was 22 years old and she was 19 years old. Their secret to a long marriage is all about communication and a sense of humor.

    Oak Trace Villas will open their community to visitors for the annual community- wide yard sale this weekend. The sale is from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 25 and 26.

    The community is located two blocks from State Road 200, off 103rd Street Road.

    The excitement is building for Crossroads Easter Eggstravaganza on Saturday, April 19 from 10 a.m. to noon. Everything is free! Egg hunts will be supervised by age group, with 15,000 eggs on the property! There will be games, bounce houses, cotton candy, hot dogs, drinks, sno-cones, chips, prizes, and the gospel message will be shared. Families are welcome.

  • The Jewish people

    It’s the same old question akin to the proverbial: “What came first, the chicken or the egg”? When one of my readers in Citrus County posed it to me, I thought it would make for a provocative column. So here it is, the question everybody loves to ask: Are Jews a people or a religion?
    The answer, my dear Watson, is not so elementary. There are many factors at play here and of course with two Jews you get three opinions but from my humble point of view of a liberal Jewish woman living in the State of Florida, I wish to offer the following.

  • Church just ain't what it used to be

    I have been going to church for more years than I care to remember. If I tried to remember how many years it is, I might then remember how old I am. Knowing how old I am does not have any appeal to me.
    I rather like going to church. I do not go to church because I have to. I go to church because it is a wonderful place and it is filled with wonderful people. Are there hypocrites in the church? Yes, a whole lot more.
