Who will win the Freedom quilt?

-A A +A
By Carol Jones

The Freedom Quilters group consists of 30-plus members. Over the course of six months and unimagined hours, they created a work of art in the chicken scratch quilt which they donated to the library as a fundraiser.

On behalf of the library, The Friends and Quilters Group working together will have tickets available at the library for a minimum donation of $2 per ticket or three for $5. Stop in and get your tickets from Monday, March 16, to Saturday morning, March 28.

The winner will be drawn at 11:30 a.m. March 28, during the last day of the Friends book sale. Anyone may participate and the winner need not be present at the drawing.

This heirloom quality masterpiece is king-sized, medium blue and white, with 20 panels of white, handmade stars. Each intricate star is “chicken scratch” embroidery on a checkered gingham block, and each requires at least 4 hours to make.

The completed star-squares are separated by white sashing and each block ends with a solid blue star of which there are 30. The whole is set off by a blue border.

Once the quilt top was assembled and the batting and backing basted in place, it was entirely hand-quilted by Shirley Henion, a member of Freedom Quilters. In this digital age, hand quilting is becoming a lost art, so whoever becomes the lucky winner will indeed take home a one-of-a-kind trophy.

For information on ticket purchases prior to March 16, contacts are as follows:

For the Freedom Quilters: Sylvia Fiorello at 873-1339. For the Friends: Carol Jones at 873-8565.

Friends Spring

Book Sale

If you need to get away from the daily grind but can’t afford a trip in today’s economy, here’s an inexpensive escape. Attend the Friends spring book sale. An armload of books can provide hours of visits to other places at the lowest cost imaginable, and you’ll meet lots of interesting people among the pages.

“Change” seems to be the operative word these days and the Friends have changed the hours of their sale. When the library opens at 10 a.m. the sale will be Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 26, 27 and 28. On Thursday and Friday, the sale lasts until 6 p.m. Instead of closing as usual at noon on Saturday, March 28, the sale will continue for one hour longer, ending at 1 p.m. Watch for unadvertised specials.

And remember, Saturday at 11:30 a.m. is the drawing for the chicken scratch quilt described above.

Master Gardeners

On Saturday, March 21 at 2 p.m., Master Gardener Al Nimke will talk about bromeliads. The Mobile Plant Clinic will also be available in the parking lot to answer questions and help with plant problems.

Ask Arnold

The library’s computer coach, Arnold Hansen, fields questions and gives hands-on help every Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. in the computer lab, no registration required. He has agreed to share some of those Q & As.

“Sometimes the mouse quits working,” says Arnold, “and you are unable to shut down the computer correctly. Here is how you do it from the keyboard.”

3 There is a key on the keyboard which has the Microsoft logo on it. It looks like a small flag. Press this key and the start menu will come up.

3 Then hit the letter “U” key twice and the computer should shut down properly.

3 If you want to close any open windows first, use alt + F4 (hold alt key down and hit F4). You need to do this once for each open window.

Book Discussion Group

On Friday, March 20, the book club that meets from 1 to 3 p.m. will discuss “The Reivers” by William Faulkner during the first half of the meeting. Then, discussions on “A Team of Rivals” by Doris Kearne Goodwin continue with chapters 8 to 11, ending Part I. For more information on joining this group, e-mail Lee Staiger at leestaiger@embarqmail.com.
