Historical Novel Society to meet

Youth group hosts indoor sale

An “indoor yard sale” will be held by the youth group of Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church in Citrus Springs On Saturday, Sept. 10 from 9 a.m. to noon.
The sale of a variety of interesting items will be held in the air-conditioned Luther Hall.
Hope Lutheran Church is located at 9425 N. Citrus Springs Blvd. The sale is open to the public.

Car wash at St. Jude

The St. Jude Men’s Society is collaborating with the St. Jude Youth Group to hold a fund-raising car wash on Saturday, Sept. 10, on the grounds of the church at 443 Marion Oaks Drive in Marion Oaks between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Cost is $5 per car. This is the perfect time to get the summer dirt and grime removed from the outside of your car.

Vegetable garden expo set

UF/IFAS Marion County Extension Service and Marion County Master Gardeners will conduct a vegetable garden expo on Sept. 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Marion County Extension Service auditorium (2232 N.E. Jacksonville Road, Ocala)
Get a head-start on your fall vegetable garden at the vegetable garden expo, hosted by UF/IFAS Marion County Extension Service and Marion County Master Gardeners.

Air Force Association group meets

The Red Tail Memorial Chapter 136 of the Air Force Association (AFA) will hold our September meeting on Thursday evening, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m. at the Ocala Airport Administration Building, 750 S.W. 60th Ave. This is our annual awards meeting so plan to get there early. Golf event to benefit Special Olympics

The inaugural “Be a Fan” benefit golf tournament for Special Olympics Marion County, sponsored by the Ocala Palms Community, will be Saturday, Sept. 17, at Ocala Palms Golf and Country Club.
There will be donuts, juice and coffee at 7:30 a.m. and a four-person best ball shotgun scramble at 8:30 a.m.
Cost is $75 per player and includes green fees and cart, range balls and buffet lunch. There will be prizes and raffles.

All About Kids Expo

An All About Kids Expo will take place on Saturday, Setp. 17, in the Paddock Mall parking lot behind Sears from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is free.
The Lions Club vision and hearing screening van will be on site for free screenings. Children of all ages are welcome, Screenings are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bring your I-pods or MP3 players and plug them into CHIP and he can tell you if you’re listening at a safe volumn.
There will be Ocala Police Dept.. Kids Safety information and the Marion County Sheriff’s Ofice D&A Kits/Cadet Program. Refreshments will be available for purchase.
The event is hosted by Lions Club and Citrus Hearing Impaired Program services (CHIP). The Florida Masonic child ID program will also be there.

Run for autism at Silver Springs

The eighth annual 5K autumn run for autism will be at Silver Springs on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 7:30 a.m. Entries are $15 for adults, $12 for students 19 and under, and all entries will be $20 after Sept. 12.
All run activities take place in the Wild Waters parking lot. The first 200 entrants will receive complimentary custom shirts. M/F awards given to the top overall, top masters, and top three in each 5-year age group from 9 and under to 70+. Walkers are invited and will begin after the runners . There will be a free kids 1-Mile Fun Run. Post run activities include a drawing for prizes from local businesses and area attractions (Disney, Sea World, etc.), lots of food and fun, and autism information. All participants receive a discounted park admission to Silver Springs, so bring the whole family. Race benefits New Horizon Academy for Exceptional Students. German American group to celebrate

The German American Club of Marion County will host an Oktoberfest on Sunday, Sept. 18 at the Marion Oaks Community Center; doors open at noon and dinner will be at 1 p.m. Tickets are $20 per member and $25 per non-member. Meal includes chicken schnitzel, bratwurst, leberkaese with onions, sauerkraut, red cabbage, German potato salad, spaetzle and apple strudel. Music provided by Bavarian Oskar. Christian 12 Step fashion show

The Christian 12 Step Ministry of Ocala, an addiction alcohol and substance abuse recovery program, is holding its first fashion show and luncheon. All proceeds will benefit the Christian 12 Step Ministry in their mission to help those in need of substance recovery.
The show will take place on Monday, Sept. 19 at noon in the Royal Oaks Golf Club Dining Room at Oak Run Country Club in Ocala. Tickets are $25 per person and include lunch, entertainment, door prizes and a fashion show exclusively by Beall’s Department Store.

Trash to Treasure sale

The Church of the Advent, 11251 S.W. County Road 484, will have its annual Trash to Treasure Sale on Saturday Sept. 24. (Rain date Oct. 1). This will be an outdoor event. German dinner at St. Jude

St. Jude Catholic Community’s annual German dinner is to be held on Saturday, Sept. 24, at 5:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall of St. Jude, 443 Marion Oaks Drive in Marion Oaks. Golf tourney to benefit United Way

College of Central Florida will host a four-person Best Ball Scramble format golf tournament on Saturday, Sept. 24. All proceeds from the event will be donated to United Way of Marion County.  
The tournament will be held at Pine Oaks of Ocala, 2201 N.W. 21st St. in Ocala, beginning at 8:30 a.m. The cost is $50 per person.

Palm Cay craft fair

On Oct. 1, Palm Cay will have its craft fair which will be open to the public. The fair will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Clubhouse. There will be a baked goods sale going on at the same time and also a quilt raffle. Our kitchen will be open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to buy a hot dog for lunch along with something to drink.

Drawing classes at Unitarian Fellowship

Jan Hitchcock will teach drawing Sat mornings at 9:30, beginning Oct. 1, at the Unitarian Fellowship in Citrus Springs. $60 for the series of six lessons in black or colored pencils, with individual attention for all levels.
