Saturday, Aug. 20

Hard Rock Casino Trip

St. Jude Catholic Community is sponsoring another bus trip to the Hard Rock Café and Casino in Tampa on Saturday, Aug. 20. Tickets are $30 per person. Each person gets $25 returned for free play and a $5 food voucher. Moose breakfast is served

Every Sunday from 9 a.m. until noon, a fantastic buffet is provided at one great price! It includes scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, ham, potatoes, grits, biscuits with country gravy, juice, fruit, coffee and more. Rally in Ocala

On Wednesday, Aug. 24, on the Square in Downtown Ocala there will be a rally in support of Glenn Beck’s Restoring Courage Rally in Israel. The rally will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This activity is sponsored by Tea Party Solutions of Ocala.

Used book sale

There will be a sale of used books, CDs and other small crafts to benefit Sheltering Hands Rescue, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Winn-Dixie in Friendship Center, 8445 S.W. State Road 200. For information call 352-291-1962.

African Violet Club meets

The African Violet Club of Ocala meeting this month is Aug. 27 and is held every fourth Saturday of the month except in December. It is at 10:30 a.m. at the Marion County Sheriff’s Office (Brian Litz Sheriff’s Substation) at 9048 S.W. Highway 200 in Ocala.
Bring in your favorite Gesneriad or African violet to show the club.  It’s always fun to see what people enjoy and share.

The Breast Cancer SOS (Sisterhood of Survivors) Support Group meets the last Tuesday of each month at Ocala West United Methodist Church, 9330 S.W. 105th St., in Room 104 at 1 p.m.

A fundraiser for Operation Christmas Child, collecting items to fill shoe boxes or donations, will take place at the Walmart on State Road 200 on Sept. 16-17, and the Walmart on Southwest 19th Avenue Road and 27th Avenue on Oct. 7 and 8.

Golf event to benefit Special Olympics

The inaugural “Be a Fan” benefit golf tournament for Special Olympics Marion County, sponsored by the Ocala Palms Community, will be Saturday, Sept. 17, at Ocala Palms Golf and Country Club.
There will be donuts, juice and coffee at 7:30 a.m. and a four-person best ball shotgun scramble at 8:30 a.m.
Cost is $75 per player and includes green fees and cart, range balls and buffet lunch. There will be prizes and raffles.

All About Kids Expo

An All About Kids Expo will take place on Saturday, Sept. 17, in the Paddock Mall parking lot behind Sears from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is free.
The Lions Club vision and hearing screening van will be on site for free screenings. Children of all ages are welcome, Screenings are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bring your I-pods or MP3 players and plug them into CHIP and he can tell you if you’re listening at a safe volumn.
There will be Ocala Police Dept. Kids Safety information and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office D&A Kits/Cadet Program. Refreshments will be available for purchase.
The event is hosted by Lions Club and Citrus Hearing Impaired Program services (CHIP). The Florida Masonic child ID program will also be there.

Christian 12 Step fashion show

The Christian 12 Step Ministry of Ocala, an addiction alcohol and substance abuse recovery program, is holding its first fashion show and luncheon. All proceeds will benefit the Christian 12 Step Ministry in their mission to help those in need of substance recovery.
The show will take place on Monday, Sept. 19 at noon in the Royal Oaks Golf Club Dining Room at Oak Run Country Club in Ocala. Tickets are $25 per person and include lunch, entertainment, door prizes and a fashion show exclusively by Beall’s Department Store.
Christian substance abuse treatment effectively combines spiritual healing with a traditional rehabilitation program. The Christian 12 Step Ministry helps heal lives and families here in our community. This fun event of fashion and pampering will help support their mission and our community.

Trash to Treasure sale

The Church of the Advent, 11251 S.W. County Road 484, will have its annual Trash to Treasure Sale on Saturday Sept. 24. (Rain date Oct. 1). This will be an outdoor event. Crafters, Flea Market and Food Venders are invited to attend. Spaces will be 10 x 10, with many of them being in the shade, and rent for $ 15 each.
Set up will begin at 6 a.m. with the sale beginning at 8 a.m. and ending at 2 p.m. You must provide your own tables.

Palm Cay craft fair

On Oct. 1, Palm Cay will have its craft fair which will be open to the public. The fair will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Clubhouse. There will be a baked goods sale going on at the same time and also a quilt raffle. Our kitchen will be open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to buy a hot dog for lunch along with something to drink.

VFW plans flea market

VFW Post 4781 will hold a flea market on Oct. 7 and 8 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. There will be bargains galore inside and out.
The organization needs your donations of household goods, small or large. Proceeds benefit Veterans Services. Small items may be brought in boxes, and left in the corner of the dining room. We can pick up large items. Hot Dogs and hamburgers will be available along with a bake sale. Larger donations - call Art for pickup of large items at 352-209-0668. A “Food for Thought” luncheon will be hosted by the Parish Nurses at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 5200 S.W. State Road 200. The guest speaker will be John Podkomorski.
