Morning show on the square

Orlando-based radio station, XL106.7, will broadcast its morning show, “Johnny’s House” from the gazebo on the downtown square Friday, June 22.
Ocala is one of four central Florida locations from which the morning show will broadcast during the month on June. Ocala chosen for the “World Tour” by listeners responding to an on-air and social media poll. The broadcast will take place from 6 to 10 a.m.

African Violet Club to meet

The African Violet Club will meet Saturday, June 23, at 10:30 a.m. at the Marion County Sheriff’s Office (Brian Litz Sheriff’s Substation), 9048 S.W. State Road 200, Ocala.
A fun program is planned. The new slate of officers will be inducted at the June meeting.
One of the very talented members creates the program and it is always fun and entertaining to observe the induction.
Also introduced will be the “Plant Clinic” and “Show Time”.
Delicious light refreshments will be served.

Marion Oaks Democratic dinner

The Marion Oaks Democratic Club will hold a fundraising dinner dance on Saturday, June 23, from 6 to 11:30 p.m. at the Marion Oaks Community Center.
Donation is $50 per person. BYOB, and setups wll be available. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m.

Moose to sponsor golf tournament
A four person best ball golf tournament will be held on June 23 at Marion Oaks Country Club. Longest drive and closest to the pin contests are part of the fun. Mulligans will be available for purchase.
Tee time is 8 a.m. with a shotgun start. This 18-hole event will offer free coffee, donuts, prizes and plenty of laughs followed by a ½ chicken and fixin’s lunch at West Marion Moose Lodge.

Watch, clock collectors to meet

Chapter 156 of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors will meet on the fourth Sunday of each month, except December, at VFW Post 4781, 9401 S.E. 110th St., Ocala, off State Road 200 behind Sims Furniture. Doors open at 8 a.m.
The organization’s mission is to advance the knowledge of horology (the study of time keeping). The local chapter’s membership is made up of collectors and craftsman of clocks and watches. The chapter covers Marion, Alachua, Citrus, Lake, Levy, Sumter and Hernando counties.
The meetings consist of a general membership meeting, mart, and presentation. The presentation topics are on repair and maintenance of clocks and watches and related subjects. The public is welcome. We encourage people who are avid collectors or those who have an interest in clocks and watch to attend. There is a $2 fee which covers refreshments and expenses.

Afternoon of music offered by Jazz Society

The Ocala Jazz Society returns to the VFW Post 4781, across from Oak Run, on the third Sunday of each month, 2 to 5 p.m. Because of Father’s Day, however, this month the date is June 24.
The group plays more than jazz including favorite songs from past year. Dancing is encouraged.
Admission is $2 and benefits Hospice in memory of Bea Wilson, founder of the Jazz Society.

Stroke support group to meet

The Ocala Health Stroke Support Group meets every fourth Tuesday of the month from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Senior Wellness Community Center (9850 S.W. 84th Court, Suite 500, Ocala). The next meeting will be held on June 26.
The Ocala Health Stroke Support Group is for stroke survivors and their families and provides a forum for support, encouragement, and acceptance of a new and changing life. Interested persons are encouraged to contact 1-800-530-1188 for more information and to register.

Breast Cancer support group

The Breast Cancer Sisterhood of Survivors (SOS) support group meets the last Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m. at Ocala West United Methodist Church, 9330 S.W. 105th St., Room 104.

Queen of Peace Catholic Church will hold a spaghetti dinner on Friday, June 29, from 4 to 6 p.m.
The cost is $7 per person. Children 18 and under are free. Menu is all you can eat and includes spaghetti, meat balls, bread and a 25-item salad bar. Beverage is included.

Ocala West to mark anniversary

Ocala West UM Church will be celebrating its 25th anniversary June 30 and July 1.
All former pastors and their families along with all charter members will gather in celebration of God’s blessing on one of the newest and fastest growing churches in the 200 corridor.
The theme of the celebration will be “Led by the spirit to do great things!”
Saturday, June 30, at 5:30 p.m., there will be a boxed chicken dinner served in Stanfield Hall followed by a worship service with Past Pastor Archie Buie delivering the message of the evening.
Sunday, July 1, Past Pastor Don Hanna will bring the message at the only service at 10 a.m. All charter members will be introduced.
Everyone is invited to attend.

Book sale for Sheltering Hands

A book sale will take place Saturday, June 30, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Winn-Dixie, 8445 S.W. State Road 200, in honor of June being Adopt a Shelter Cat Month, to benefit Sheltering Hands Rescue.

Teams sought for Chili Cook Off

Teams from organizations or businesses are being sought to prepare and sell their chili at our first Red Hot Rescue Chili Cook Off to benefit Sheltering Hands Rescue. Event will be held Sunday, Oct. 21 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Ramada Inn in Ocala. The entry fee is $25 per team and each team is allowed to retain their chili sale proceeds or donate them to their favorite charity.
For art and craft vendors wanting to sell items, the price is $25 for 8-foot inside table, $15 for an outside 12x12 feet space (no tables or chairs included.)
The deadline for submitting applications is Aug. 3.
There will be arts and crafts, lots of plants, cash prizes, 50/50 raffle, beer/wine, food and of course, chili.
