Maranatha Easter Eggstravaganza
 
On Saturday, April 7, the day before Easter, Maranatha Baptist Church will host Maranatha's Easter Eggstravaganza.
This will be a community event where families are invited to come hunt Easter eggs and have fun.
We will have an egg hunt for the wee little ones (birth to Pre-K) and a separate egg hunt for the elementary-age children (kindergarten to Grade 5).
This will be a free event, and prizes will be given out for those who register, which will include gift cards and gift certificates from local businesses in the Marion Oaks area.

Chess Club to meet

The Chess Club that formed at the Freedom Public Library meets the first Saturday of the month, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Grab your board and chess pieces and come on down.
Interested persons are invited to attend for a rousing game of chess.

Passover seder scheduled

Congregation Beth Israel of Ocala will hold a Passover seder on the second night of the holiday, April 7 at 6 p.m. at the Arbor Club Ballroom at On Top of the World , Southwest 94th Street, Ocala. The seder will be conducted mainly in English with participation from those present. Sonia Peterson will be leading. The traditional Passover fare consists of a beef, chicken or fish entrée and the cost is $30 for members, $35 for non-members. Reservations are requested by March 31 to Estelle by calling 352-237-8277.

Hospice supports caregivers

All caregivers are invited to a new Support Group at Hospice of Marion County on April 10 from 3 to 4 p.m. in the Education Center at 3231 S.W. 34th Ave., Ocala.
Caregivers of loved ones with any disease or illness are welcome. The group will offer an opportunity to connect with others in the same situation and provide guidance as well as emotional and spiritual support.

Dinner dance in Dunnellon

On April 14, the Knights of Columbus Council 8510 will be hosting a "Knight in Italy" dinner dance  at St. John the Baptist Parish Hall, 7525 S. U.S. Highway 41, Dunnellon.  Doors open at 5:30, dinner at 6:30.
The menu will be Chicken Italiano, Italian sausage with peppers and onion, Italian green beans, a hot pasta dish and a salad plus our dessert table and a cash bar. Music is by DJ/Singer Joe Koos, playing many of the old favorites including Sinatra, Como and Lanza. Western line dances and some country music will be included to keep all entertained.

Authors invited to Expo

The Marion County Public Library System invites writers from Marion and adjacent counties to participate in the 2012 Author Expo, to be held Saturday, April 14, at its Headquarters-Ocala location. Sponsored by the Friends of the Ocala Public Library, the event will provide a forum for local poets, novelists, journalists and playwrights to network and sell their books.  
“Our first Author Expo is a great opportunity for the talented writers in Marion and surrounding counties to get together, talk about their books and share helpful hints with the public,” said Roseanne Russo, information services manager for the Headquarters-Ocala location.
The event is open to all authors in Marion, Lake, Levy, Citrus, Alachua and Sumter counties. Space is limited; prospective authors must apply by March 16 to participate. Registration includes a $10 fee in lieu of a percentage of book sales on the day of the event. Golf tourney to benefit United Way

CenturyLink will host a four-person Best Ball Scramble format golf tournament on Saturday, April 14. All proceeds from the event will be donated to United Way of Marion County.   
The tournament will be at the Ocala Municipal Golf Club, 3130 E. Silver Springs Blvd, beginning at 8 a.m.  The cost is $260 per team.  Entry deadline is April 6.
Entry fee includes golf, cart, lunch and grab bags.  Prizes will be awarded for longest drive and closest to the pin.  Sponsorships are available for $125 per hole without a team or $100 with a team. Presenting sponsorships are also available.  Sign up forms are available at www.uwmc.org.

Artists on display at Circle Square

Local artists from On Top of the World, Oak Run, Palm Cay, Stone Creek and other communities in Ocala showcase their masterpieces at this annual art expo on Saturday, April 14 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Circle Square Cultural Center. Works include paintings, sculptures, stained glass, portrait sketches, clay jewelry, metal artwork, watercolors and much more. Enjoy live entertainment by the Paul De Ritter Duo as during the expo. Rotary golf tournament set

The Ocala Rotary Club is hosting its 22nd annual golf tournament at the Ocala Golf Club on Thursday, April 19, at 12:30 p.m.  Proceeds Benefit the Marion County Youth at the Discovery Science Center and other Rotary Charities.  The cost is $85 per player for a four person scramble, shotgun start which includes, lunch, golf and drinks.  Prizes will be awarded after play for longest drive, closest to the pin, top teams and hole in one.  Entry deadline is April 17 at 5 p.m.  Contact Kay Kelly at 352-732-7080 for more information.

Steel drum ensemble to perform

Young at Heart, College Road Baptist Church, on April 19 will present the Amazing Steel Drum Ensemble. This is a group of young people using hand crafted drums, to provide "happy" music. Their purpose is to reach the young and their families. This a 6 p.m. event to accommodate school hours. You are invited to bring your children and grandchildren, just bring a covered dish to share. Baritone in concert

Douglas Ladnier (baritone) will be in concert on Thursday evening, April 19, at 7 p.m. at Ocala West United Methodist Church. Two-day concert band performance

The Ocala Jazz Society returns to the VFW Post 4781, across from Oak Run, usually on the third Sunday of each month, 2 to 5 p.m. – well most months.
This month, because of a scheduling conflict, April 22 is the date.
The group plays more than jazz including favorite songs from past year. Dancing is encouraged.

Breast Cancer Support Group meeting
 
The Breast Cancer SOS (Sisterhood of Survivors) Support Group meets the last Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m.  We meet at Ocala West United Methodist Church, 9330 S.W. 105th St.  
The April 24th meeting will be a presentation by  Dr. Anderson from Boissoneault Oncology Institute who will speak to us on current radiation techniques, benefits and cautions of this type of therapy following or preceding breast cancer surgery. This meeting will be held in the Multipurpose Room 235 in order to accommodate a larger attendance and is open to anyone who would like to hear Dr. Anderson’s message. Vendors sought for Blueberry Festival

Craft vendors are being sought for the first Blueberry Festival in Ocala to benefit Sheltering Hands Rescue.
The event will be Sunday, June 3, at Ramada Inn, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Ocala. Vendor fee is $20 inside space, $15/outside. The deadline for applications is April 16.
There will be prizes, a baking contest, fresh blueberries, 50/50 raffle, and food.
