Sheriff’s Office sells ribs for United Way

Marion County Sheriff’s Office is holding its annual United Way Super Bowl Rib Sale on Friday, Feb. 3, from noon to 6 p.m. Tickets are available for $15 per slab and can be picked up at the Sheriff’s complex at 692 N.W. 30th Ave. in Ocala.  Delivery is also available.

Church hosts yard sale

The Crossroad Church, 8070 S.W. 60th Ave., will host a yard sale on Saturday, Feb. 4, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Lions Club holds yard sale

The Ocala Lions Club will hold a yard sale on Saturday, Feb. 4 to raise funds to sponsor a service dog.

The sale is set for the old Porter’s Nursery located in the Friendship Shopping Plaza, from 8 a.m. till 4 p.m.

Gently used household items as well as furniture will be offered. Anyone wanting to donate items, other than clothing, for the yard sale may contact Bill Thomas, 352-291-2600.

Democrats to hear Sizemore

Mike Sizemore, former chairman of the Marion County Democratic Party, will be guest speaker when the Democratic Executive Committee (DEC) of Marion County holds its regular monthly meeting on Monday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m. The retired railroad executive and community activist will highlight the manner in which the DEC can best help local candidates with their campaigns when he describes the important role the DEC can play in helping them achieve public office.

State Committeewoman Joyce Blake and others will also discuss planning for a series of get-out-the-vote and fundraising events.

On Feb. 9, the Palm Cay Republican Club will conduct its monthly meeting at the Oasis Club in Palm Cay.

The speakers for February are Carol Ely, who is running for School Board; George Tomyn, who is a candidate for Superintendent of Schools for Marion County; Dana Couchen, who is running for County Commissioner from Dist. 5; and George Albright, who is running for County Tax Collector. Casino trip offered as fundraiser

The Ocala 200 Lions Club will be sponsoring a fundraiser to the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Tampa on Friday, Feb. 10. Cost is $30 per person.

Trip includes round-trip transportation and $30 return for free play and lunch vouchers.   Gaming tables are available.

.  The bus will leave the Winn-Dixie (Porter’s) parking lot at 8 a.m. and return at approximately 5 p.m. All proceeds, as always, will be used by the Lions for community projects. ‘World Has Talent’ auditions set

Auditions for the Circle Square Cultural Center’s third annual “The World Has Talent” 55+ talent show will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 15.  Active adults age 55+ are invited on stage where the top chosen acts will perform at “The World Has Talent” 55+ Talent Show at the Circle Square Cultural Center on Saturday, May 5.  The chosen contestants will compete for a chance to win the $500 first place, $250 second place and $150 third place prizes!

The Widowed Persons Service of Marion County will be giving a six-week support group program beginning on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at the First Congregational Church, 7171 S.W. Scandinavian Club of Marion County:

The Scandinavian Club of Marion County invites people of Danish, Finish, Icelandic, Norwegian and Swedish decent to join us at our next meeting on Feb. 18. Amateur Radio Class to begin

A Technician Amateur Radio Class will start Saturday, Feb. 18 from 9 to 11 a.m. for seven weeks at the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Emergency Management Center, 692 N.W. 30th Ave., Ocala.  The FCC test will be given on March 31, 2012 with a test fee of $15.00, collected on the test day.  Manuals will be available to loan to students.  This class should prepare you to pass the FCC test and obtain an Amateur Radio Technician License.

Hospice trail ride

Hospice of Marion County, Inc. will hold its 12th annual “Horses for Hospice” Trail Ride on Sat., Feb. 18, on the Central Florida Greenway at the Florida Horse Park in Ocala. This year’s ride is in memory of Wayne Vaught, former Cross Florida Greenway enthusiast and Trail Ride chairman.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the first ride leaves at 9:15 a.m. Riders travel from as far as Jacksonville and Tampa to spend 2-3 hours on the trail. Following the ride, participants can enjoy lunch by Tommy’s BBQ, live entertainment by Bordertown, and door prizes.

Proceeds from this event will benefit Patient Care Programs. The minimum donation to ride is $30. Wagons are welcome; $30 for driver and $10 per passenger. Tee Time for Tots

Community Bank and Trust of Florida is having the 10th annual Tee Time for Tots Golf Tournament on March 3 at Del Webb Spruce Creek.

Funds are being raised to benefit the Marion County Homeless Children & Youth program and they need our assistance more than ever.  Right here in our own back yard there are over 1,500 school aged homeless children. These statistics are just shocking.

Showtime for Sweet Adelines

Music lovers need to mark your calendars for the Summer Springs Sweet Adelines Chorus annual show, Saturday, March 3, at 3 p.m. in the First Christian Church, 1908 S.E. Fort King Street, Ocala. International Woman’s Day

Barbara Surian, a motivational speaker and resident of Ocala, will be inspiring young women at the International Woman's Day Celebration on March 8. This date was proclaimed a U.N. day for women s rights and International Peace in 1975 and will be celebrated at 4 p.m. at the Nature Coast Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Citrus Springs.

Music and a keynote speech by Mindy Simmons, Florida's chanteuse, will be followed by the talk by Barbara Surian, of Ocala, and more music by a Trio from Patchwork. All men, women, boys and girls are invited to this nonreligious community event; there is no charge and refreshments will be served.

Ocala Open Golf Tourney

A Charity Pro-Am event kicks off the Ocala Open on Tues., March 13, 2012 at Candler Hills Golf Club. Proceeds from the event benefit Hospice of Marion County and Interfaith Emergency Services.

Start the day with breakfast then select a tee gift at the Nike tent. Participants will warm-up next to pros who will be vying for Ocala Open honors; play golf with the pro and get a few pointers on your own game. The day concludes with the Champion’s Roundup Barbeque and Awards Luncheon.

Organ students to perform

Hosted by the Ocala Chapter of the American Guild of Organists (AGO), the organ students of the University of Florida will present a varied program on Sunday, March 25, at 3 p.m. on the beautiful pipe organ at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ocala.  The program will include works by David German, J.S. Bach, César Franck, Olivier Messiaen, Johann Pachelbel, Derek Bourgeois, and John Weaver. 

Some of the students are organ majors while others are doubling majors or minors in music with mechanical and aerospace engineering or linguistics.  Their professor, Dr. Laura Ellis, presented a concert for Ocala AGO last November.  Admission to the concert is free but a free-will offering will be taken.  The American Guild of Organists is an organization with a national membership of over 20,000.  Visit their website at www.agohq.org
