Saturday, June 4

Health checks for student athletes

Marion County Public Schools was already on the path to test student athletes for heart problems this fall, but following the sudden deaths of two Michigan and Colorado student athletes -- and one next door in Alachua County earlier this year -- that program will happen sooner than later.  Now, local student athletes will have heart problems detected at minimum cost.

Marion County Public Schools has partnered with the Orlando Magic, local healthcare professionals, and the Athletic Heart Institute to prevent the same tragedy from happening locally.

On Saturday, June 4, local student athletes will undergo a physical and EKG (electrocardiogram) to detect heart abnormalities.  The screenings take place at Community Technical and Adult Education in Ocala (1014 S.W. 7th Road) from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

A $10 charge includes on-site mobile testing, a physical exam, an EKG, and consultation with a cardiologist if necessary.

Student athletes were invited via their coaches to participate in the first-ever venture. Testing is optional, and parents are strongly encouraged to accompany their student athletes. The district anticipates 850-1,000 student athletes will be screened.

No make-up sessions will be offered.

For more information, call Ed McPadden, coordinator of athletic programs for the district, at 352-236-0586.
