CF to hold graduation

The College of Central Florida will hold its spring 2011 commencement ceremony on Friday, May 6. The ceremony begins at 7 p.m. on the center lawn of the Fine Arts Auditorium at the Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road.

Sen. Charles S. Dean Sr. will receive the Distinguished Alumni Award. The graduation speaker will be Sunny Morelock.

Derby Day ribs fundraiser

The Rotary Club of Ocala Southwest is selling tickets for its baby back ribs barbecue fundraiser, which will be on Saturday, May 7.

Tickets are $15 for a full rack of baby back ribs. All ribs will be cooked on site and wrapped for transport.

Ribs can be picked up from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Park Avenue Bank, 8375 S.W. State Road 200.

Tickets are available at the following locations: Park Avenue Bank, Mercantile Bank, 11250 S.W. 93rd Court Road; M&S Bank, 5400 S.W. College Road; and Alarion Bank, 7605 S.W. State Road 200.

All proceeds will benefit the College of Central Florida nursing scholarship program and local charities.

Peripheral Neuropathy group meets

The next meeting of the Ocala Peripheral Neuropathy Support Group will be held on Saturday, May 7, at 10 a.m. at the Marion County Sheriff’s Brian Litz Building, 9048 S.W. State Road 200. Individuals afflicted with this disease, their family members and friends are encouraged to attend. Anyone interested in learning about peripheral neuropathy is invited to attend. Yoga at Sholom Park

 

Sholom Park Yoga will begin on Saturday, May 7 at 9 a.m. We will meet on the first Saturday of each month until November, weather permitting.

Church of the Advent fashion show

 

The ladies of the Episcopal Church of the Advent are putting on their annual fashion show and luncheon at noon, Saturday, May 7 in the church. Located just one mile west of State Road 200 on County Road 484 (across from the new fire station) the festivities will include fashions from Bealls for men, children and of course, the ladies. The chess club that formed at the Freedom Public Library meets the first Saturday of the month, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Drill Team show

 

The Great Adventure Drill Team will be hosting its annual Summer Funshows on May 7, June 4, June 25, and Aug. 6 at 6 p.m. at the Williston Horseman’s Park, 1.5 miles south of Williston on U.S. Highway 41.

Contestants from all over Florida will be there to compete for a buckle and other prizes! Spectator admission is FREE and food and drinks will be available. Be ready for some heart pounding exciting barrel racing and pole bending, and some unusual races, such as the hilarious freezie pop race. It's all in good fun!

Wagoner, Zalak to speak at Palm Cay

 

On May 12, the Palm Cay Republican Club will welcome as its guest speakers Wally Wagoner, who is a candidate for Marion County school superintendent, and Carl Zalak, county commissioner.

Be sure and mark your calendars.  Both of these gentlemen have an outstanding knowledge of what is happening in Marion County.  The meeting will be held at the Oasis Club and begins promptly at 7 p.m. and closes at 8 p.m. followed by a time of refreshments.

Italian Dinner at St. Jude

 

The annual Italian Dinner sponsored by the Ladies Guild is planned for Saturday, May 14, at 5:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall of St. Jude Catholic Community. A traditional Italian meal will be served. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children under the age of 12. As usual takeouts will be available. Tickets may be obtained after the weekend Masses. No tickets will be sold at the door.

Plant sale to be conducted

A Master Gardener summer plant sale will be held May 14, 8 a.m. to noon, at UF/IFAS Marion County Extension Service, 2232 N.E. Jacksonville Road, Ocala.

All season long, Marion County Extension Service Master Gardener volunteers have braved both sun and rain to grow everything from sweet blueberries and brilliant flowers to shade trees. This month, they will offer county residents the fruits of their labor at their annual summer plant sale. Every plant purchased at the sale benefits Extension Service’s educational programs, demonstration gardens, plant clinics and other services offered to Marion County citizens.

Garden goodies available for purchase will include:

-         Native and Florida-friendly vegetation.

-         Shrubs and perennials.

-         Butterfly-attracting plants.

-         Fruit and shade trees.

-         Blueberries bushes and muscadine grape vines.

 

Visitors may also attend “Planting for Butterflies” demonstrations at 8:15 a.m. and 10 a.m.

Master Gardeners are a group of volunteers who serve under the direction of the UF/IFAS Marion County Extension Service to educate residents on how to design, plant and maintain their gardens and landscapes using Florida-friendly techniques.  

 

 

 

 

 

Multi-class reunion at DHS

Dunnellon High School will hold a multi-class reunion for graduates from 1967 through 1972 on Saturday, May 14, called “A Day on the Rainbow” and “A Night at Juliettes.”

For A Day on the Rainbow - $25 from 8 a.m. to dusk at Rainbow Springs State Park. Various activities, deli sandwich and build a salad lunch.

The Night at Juliettes is $38 from 6 to 10:30 p.m. at Rainbow Springs Golf and Country Club, all you can eat buffet dinner, dance, various short presentations, music by Chris White, KJDJ Music.

Postal carriers to pick up food

 

On Saturday, May 14, letter carriers throughout Marion County will participate in the 19th  annual National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) National Food Drive to “Stamp Out Hunger.”

This annual effort has become the largest one-day food drive in the nation’s history, resulting in more than a half billion pounds of food to local food banks, pantries and shelters in all 50 states. 

Postal customers are asked to hang a food donation on their mailbox before their letter carrier delivers the mail on Saturday, May 14, and the carrier will do the rest.  Collection barrels will also be set up at all Post Office branches to accommodate those with Post Office Boxes.

For individuals interested in volunteering for the collection and unloading/loading, please call Thomas Curtis at 352-572-5634.  Service hours for high school students are available.

Martha Reeves to perform

 

Martha (Reeves) and the Vandellas were among the most successful groups of the Motown roster during the period 1963-1967. In contrast to other Motown groups such as The Supremes and The Marvelettes, Martha and the Vandellas were known for a harder R&B sound, typified by "(Love Is Like a) Heat Wave," "Nowhere to Run," "Jimmy Mack" and their signature song, "Dancing in the Street."

In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Martha and the Vandellas No. 96 on their list of the 100 greatest artists of all time.  Miss Martha Reeves’ performances in 2010 garnered nominations for “Best Headliner” and “Feel Good Performer of the Summer” at the UK Festival Awards.

Scandinavian Club to meet

 

The Scandinavian Club of Marion County invites people of Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian and Swedish descent to join us at our next meeting on May 21.  We will meet at the Hilton Ocala, 3600 S.W. 36th Ave. in Ocala.  The menu will be baked talapia or herb chicken with rice, vegetable, salad, bread, beverage and dessert.  Entertainment will be provided by The Jo Trio.  The cost is $15 per person and reservations and advance payment are required.  Payment must be received by Wednesday, May 18.  Please make checks payable to Bill Thompson, the club’s treasurer, and mail to Scandinavian Club, P.O.
