Main Library book sale

The Friends of the Library will hold their quarterly book sale at the Library Headquarters, Silver Springs Boulevard just east of 25th Avenue East, on Saturday, May 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in meeting rooms A, B and C.
Paperbacks are 25 cents and hardbacks are 50 cents. The public is invited.

Yoga in Sholom Park

Yoga in Sholom Park begins the season at 9 a.m. sharp. It is held the first Saturday of each month until November.

Chess club to meet

The chess club that formed at the Freedom Public Library meets the first Saturday of the month, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Grab your board and chess pieces and come on down.

Woman’s Club fashion show

The GFWC Woman’s Club of Ocala and the Little Women Juniorettes of Ocala will present a Fashion Show and Luncheon on Saturday, May 2, at the Elks Club and Lodge, 702 NE 25th Ave., Ocala, at 11 a.m. The theme is Kentucky Derby Day. Members of both clubs will model fashions from a Designer clothing line. There will be an opportunity to purchase selected items and to order from the company’s catalog. Proceeds from the show will benefit local high school seniors through scholarships to further their education. The cost is $20 and the event is open to the public.

Civic Chorale concert set

On Sunday, May 3 at 3 p.m., the Marion Civic Chorale, conducted by Joshua Head, will perform their spring concert titled If Music Be the Food of Love (love songs from the British, Hebrew, and other traditions) at First United Methodist Church, 1126 E. Silver Springs Blvd. (which is SR 40), diagonally across the street from the old Ritz Hotel in Ocala. Admission is free but a free-will offering will be taken to benefit the church’s ministry to help the homeless.

Proud to Be A Democrat Dinner and Silent Auction will take place on May 3 at 5 p.m. at the Ocala Hilton.

Post-Polio Support Group to meet

The North Central Florida Post-Polio Support Group’s next meeting will be held on May 3, at 2 p.m. in the Collins Center, TimbeRidge, 9401 SW Highway 200, Bldg. 5000, Suite 5001.
This month’s program will be “25th Anniversary Celebration”, A journey through the past. Youth Symphony concert set

The Ocala Youth Symphony Orchestra is presenting its Spring Concert Sunday, May 3, 3 p.m. at West Port High School, 3733 SW 80 Ave.. Come and enjoy the musical talents of these amazing young folks ranging in age from 8 to 18.

Jewish Center fun, festivities

The Chabad Jewish Center of Marion County and The Villages is hosting a community-wide celebration, featuring a Glatt kosher barbecue, face painting, clowns, moon bounce and music on Thursday, May 7 at 5 p.m. at The Chabad Jewish Center, 3509 SW 34th Ave. Circle (off SR 200). The event will mark the observance of the Jewish holiday of Lag B’Omer, which is traditionally commemorated by large outdoor celebrations and bonfires, which harbor spiritual significance. Chabad-Lubavitch, the largest Jewish outreach organization in the world, is hosting thousands of similar Lag B’Omer celebrations in cities across the globe. The celebrations all share a common theme: Jewish Unity.

Letter carrier food drive

On May 9, you can participate in the largest annual one-day collection of food by hanging a bag of nonperishables from your mailbox. Your letter carrier will do the rest. Your donation will be taken to the Interfaith Emergency Services warehouse and then shared with other agencies in Marion County.
Salvation Army, Brothers Keeper and Saint Theresa’s rely on you to help them get through the summer months when donations are usually slow. The need for pasta, tuna fish, peanut butter, jelly, and soups are always greater in the summer months when families are not sending the children to school.
Please help make Marion County No. 1 in its category for the eighth year in a row.

Ocala West breakfast

Ocala West UMC community-wide breakfast prepared by the men’s fellowship will be held from 7:30-9:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 9 and is still only $5 for all you care to eat. All ladies attending will receive a $ 1 off discount in honor of Mother’s Day.
A varied selection awaits everyone ham, sausage, scrambled eggs, French toast, waffles, pancakes, corned beef hash, biscuits and gravy, fruit cup, juice and coffee. Breakfast proceeds benefit the many charities supported by the OWUMC men’s fellowship.

Lions Club yard sale

The Ocala 200 Lions Club is having a yard sale on Saturday, May 9 at the Bank of the Ozarks, State Road 200 in the Friendship plaza. Time will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Food will be available for purchase.

Pentecostal yard sale

The Pentecostal Trinity Church in Florida Highlands will have a community yard sale on Saturday, May 9. There will be live music, free hot dogs and free drinks.
Tables are free—come early to get one. Event hours are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Tree and plant sale

The Marion County Master Gardeners are having a tree and plant sale at the Marion County UF/IFAS Marion County Extension office, 2232 NE Jacksonville Road, next to the Southeastern Livestock Pavilion, in Ocala from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 9.
Perennials, hummingbirds and butterflies attractors, herbs, pollinators and native plants will be on sale as well as fruit, ornamental, shade trees and shrubs. Soil tests kits and garden publications will be available and Master Gardeners will be on hand for consultation. South Oaks 4-H will be available to help transport purchases. Payment by cash or check only.

Civic Chorale concert

Marion Civic Chorale will present their Mother’s Day concert “If Music Be the Food of Love” on Sunday, May 10, at 3 p.m. in the Sanctuary of Countryside Presbyterian Church, 7768 SW Highway 200.
Joshua Head is the Director and Ricky Hendrix the piano accompanist.
The Grat L. Rosazza Scholarship award will be presented to a high school
senior and the recipient will perform.

First Congregational Church is holding its first-ever Live Auction on Saturday, May 16. Be sure to get in on all the fun and excitement when doors open at 3 p.m. to view the items. Barbecue and auction

The annual St. Jude Catholic Community barbecue and auction will be held on Saturday, May 23, at 5:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall at 443 Marion Oaks Drive. Cost is $8 per person for a meal consisting of hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, Cole slaw and beverage. Tickets are available after all Masses as well as in the parish office.
