Former Sheriff Richard Mack from Graham County, Arizona, will speak to the Tea Party of Ocala at their regular meeting at 7 p.m. at the Berean Baptist Church, 4800 S.W. 20th St., Ocala.

Introduction to American Sign Language

Citrus Hearing Impaired Program Services (CHIPS) the Ocala location will offer a six-week class for anyone interested in learning American Sign Language.

Class will begin on Tuesday, March 22, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Class size is limited so please call to register. The fee for the class is $40 due on the first day of class. Call 352-368-4070 for more information.

Three-day book sale at library

 

     The Friends’ spring book sale at Freedom Public Library begins when the doors open at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 24, Friday, March 25, and Saturday, March 26. Sale ends at 8 p.m. on Thursday, 6 p.m. on Friday, and 1 p.m. on Saturday. Patrons may donate books for the sale by calling Kermit Clark, 352-861-0353.

 

Relay for Life team party

 

A Relay for Life team party will take place Thursday, March 24, at 6 p.m. at the West Marion Medical Plaza, second floor, room 240.

The Relay is scheduled for April 15-16. Come learn what Relay is about, why we Relay and how you can fight cancer. Bring your family and friends and become a part of making more birthdays possible.

Wesleyan Women’s Spring Fling

 

The Wesleyan Women will hold their Spring Fling on Saturday, March 26, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a variety of vendors and assortment of crafts and baked goods will be available. There will also be a silent auction with the drawing at 1 p.m.

The event will be at Living Water Wesleyan Church, 11120 S.W. Highway 484, one mile west of State Road 200.

Palm Cay garage sale

Palm Cay will be holding a community-wide garage sale which is open to the public on Saturday, March 26 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a hot dog luncheon at the Oasis Clubhouse from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. (address of the club house is 8063 S.W. 106th Place). Maps will be given out at the Guard House.

 

African Violet Club to meet

 

The African Violet Club of Ocala will meet on Saturday, March 26, at 10:30 a.m. at the Marion County Sheriff’s Office Brian Litz substation, 9048 S.W. State Road 200.

This will be a fun meeting with a video presentation on basic violet care and tips and tricks. The African Violet Society of America offers a wide variety of videos thro9ugh its library. This month we’ll watch one of their offerings and discuss what we as growers use and some of the new things we have been trying. Refereshments will be served at our break. Car show at county complex

 

The first car show sponsored by George Albright, Marion County tax collector, will be Saturday, March 26, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the tax collector parking lot, 503 S.E. 25th Ave., with proceeds to benefit local charities. It is open to all vehicles. Pre-registration by March 20 is $15, after that it’s $20.

SPCA plans book sale

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) of Marion County is holding a used book sale on Saturday, March 26 from 8 to 11:30 a.m. next to Winn Dixie at 8445 S.W. State Road 200 in Friendship Center (next to On Top of the World Communities).

Books are inexpensive and we have paperbacks and hardcovers on many topics. You can’t get a better bargain, so come on over and stock up on all your favorites. Help us help the animals of Marion County.

Low-cost vaccinations set

Midwest Feed and Farm in Ocala has partnered with Dr. Mark Wilson of the Florida Teaching Zoo to present the community with a series of low-cost pet vaccination clinics. These clinics allow community members to stay current on pet vaccinations and also benefit the Florida International Teaching Zoo which is a federal 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

The next scheduled clinic will be Saturday, March 26 from 10 to 11 a.m. at 3352 N.W. Blitchton Road (U.S. Highway 27) – Ocala, ¼ mile east of Interstate 75.

Costs include:

Dog and Cat Rabies - $6

Dog and Puppy Distemper/parvo combo - $14

Cat Three way/distemper - $14

Dog Kennel Cough/Bordatella - $15

Vaccinations are veterinarian administered and documentation is provided.

Cash or check only are accepted, and no sick pets are admitted. Dogs must be on leashes and cats must be in carriers.

United Way annual meeting

 

The United Way of Marion County will host the annual meeting of the membership on Tuesday, March 29 at the Webber Center located on the campus of the College of Central Florida at 8 a.m.  The meeting will include educational testimonies from teachers, businesses and parents. Attendees will also be able to pledge their support to education.  The event will also include the election of United Way board members and volunteer leadership recognition.  Tickets are $15 and corporate tables of six can be purchased for $100. RSVP deadline is Monday, March 21.

Car and craft show at Sheriff’s main office

The All Vehicles Past and Present Car Show and Craft Show will take place 9 a.m., Saturday, April 2, at the Marion County Sheriff’s Office Operations Center, 692 N.W. 30th Ave., Ocala. There is free admission to this fundraising event to benefit the Marion County Sheriff’s Office Foundation.

 

Vet Council plans memorial service

 

The Marion County Veterans Council will hold its quarterly memorial service on Saturday, April 2, at 10 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park, East Fort King Street and Northeast 25th Avenue.

The service is held every three months.

The names of veterans who have died the past three months are read. There are prayers, songs, a drum roll and a bell ringing. The Belleview High School JROTC will present and retire the colors, and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office will give the final gun salute.

Fashion Show at St. Jude

This is a good time to check out the latest fashions for your Easter outfit. The Ladies Guild of St. Jude Catholic Community will present their annual Fashion Show on Saturday, April 2, at 5:30 p.m. Members will model fashions from Belk. The Southern Express Orchestra from Ocala will be in concert at the Ocala West United Methodist Church on Sunday, April 3, at 3 p.m. Featured will be some of the great music from the Big Band days as well as show tunes. Adult Spelling Bee planned

The Marion County Literacy Council (MCLC) is holding its seventh annual “Adult Spelling Bee” on Thursday, April 21, at the Ocala Hilton (3600 S.W. 36th Ave.) at 5:30 p.m. 

The “Bee” includes dinner, silent auction, chance drawing, and the grand finale – a spelling bee competition among teams composed of corporate employees and community groups. Tickets to attend the event are $35/each or $60/couple.

All proceeds will benefit the Marion County Literacy Council, an organization of volunteer tutors who work one-on-one with Marion County adults needing help with reading, English, and GED preparation.

Dance to benefit Hospice

 

USA Dance Ocala Chapter 6027 is hosting a charity ball fundraiser to benefit Hospice of Marion County on Tuesday, May 3 from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Pioneer Garden Club (4331 East Silver Springs Blvd., next to the Appleton Museum).

The event features entertainment including professional dance exhibitions and live music performed by “Retro Express” Mitch and Diana. Other activities include open dancing, door prizes and chance drawings. General admission tickets are $15/person, which includes valet parking, food and beverages.

Attire is coat and tie to semi-formal for men and dress to semi-formal for ladies. All proceeds support Hospice of Marion County Patient Care Programs.
