TOPS to hold open house

 

TOPS (Taking Off Pounds Sensibly) will conduct an open house on Friday, Feb. 4, from 8:45 to 10 a.m.

Greek Festival in Belleview

There will be great authentic Greek food, music, dancing, entertainment, jewelry, souvenirs and much, much more Feb. 4 and 5, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Feb. 6, 1 to 6 p.m. in the annual Greek Festival.

It will take place at the Fr. George Papadeas Community Center, 9926 S.E. 36th Ave., Belleview, just north of Belleview High School. Parking is free, admission donation is $1.

Saturday, Feb. 5

Book sale at main library

The Friends of the Ocala Library will hold their quarterly book sale on Saturday, Feb. 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Rooms B and C of the main library on Silver Springs Boulevard. Thousands of tenderly-treated books in all categories will be available to browsers, the hardback books at 50 cents, and the paperbacks at 25 cents. Proceeds from these book sales are used to support the library, so come and look for that particular book, and help the Friends in that effort. You may find a real treasure! Neuropathy support group to meet

The next meeting of the Ocala peripheral neuropathy support group will be Saturday, Feb. 5 at 10 a.m. at the Sheriff’s Office Southwest substation, 9048 State Road hwy. 200, Ocala. The meeting is open to all who suffer from this disease , their family and friends. The public is invited to attend. For information, call Jack Koehler at 352-861-1630.

 

Chess Club to meet

The chess club that formed at the Freedom Public Library meets the first Saturday of the month, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Grab your board and chess pieces and come on down.

Interested persons are invited to attend for a rousing game of chess.

Yoga in a chair

Extra gentle Yoga in a chair will take place on Saturday, Feb. 5, at Freedom Public Library, from 10:15 to 11 a.m. It will continue on Feb. 12, 19 and 26.

Moose public breakfast and public bingo

 A community public breakfast will continue at the Moose lodge every Sunday from 9 a.m. til 12 noon. Coffee, juice, omelet or any style eggs, potatoes, biscuits with gravy, toast, your choice of bacon, sausage or ham, all at one great price!

 Let the bingo fun and games at 2 p.m. Enjoy our facility and help us raise funds for charity and our Fraternity’s endeavors.

Moose lunches now open to the public

A new, full lunch menu is now available Monday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at a very reasonable price. Great if you work at nearby medical centers or looking for something different.

Tuesday, Feb. 8

MaineDay in Beverly Hills

The annual “Maine Day” celebration will take place Tuesday, Feb. 8, at the Beverly Hills Recreation Hall, 77 Civic Circle. Doors open at 10 a.m. and serving starts at 11:30 a.m. Cost is $5 per person plus a casserole or salad to share. There will be coffee, iced tea, lemonade and dessert, and setting will be provided.

Entertainment will be Steve Robinson, Jazzman, who plays the bongo drums, bagpipes and trombone. There will be a 50/50.

Woman’s Club Day Group to meet

 

The GFWC Woman's Club of Ocala Day Group will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 8, at 11:45 a.m. at the Elks Club for a luncheon meeting and program.

The speaker will be author Art Adkins of Gainesville. Adkins has written two novels. The setting for "The Oasis Project" is Cedar Key.  His more recent novel is "Power Grid" which explores the secrets of Stonehenge. Adkins was selected by Insite Magazine as one of Gainesville's 28 most interesting people! He is a lieutenant with the Gainesville Police Department.

Marion Oaks PTO pasta fundraiser

 

Marion Oaks Elementary PTO and Sammy's Pizza and Restaurant is holding a Curb Side Pasta Dinner Fundraiser Feb. 8. Cost is $5.50 for an adult dinner including pasta, sauce, bread and salad, and $3.50 for a child’s dinner including pasta, sauce and bread. Tickets must be purchased ahead of time by either contacting Kari Coates at 352-470-7059 or visiting Marion Oaks Elementary School, 280 Marion Oaks Trail.  Proceeds from the fundraiser will directly benefit the school’s students.

‘Food for Thought’ event at Our Redeemer

Show scheduled at West Part

The Marion County Center for the Arts at West Port High School will present A Taste of Broadway – Dear Miss Lonelyhearts... a musical theatre review, performed in a night club atmosphere on the stage of the West Port High School Performing Arts Center, on Friday, Feb. 11 and Saturday, Feb. 12 at 6:30 p.m., and Sunday, Feb. 13 at 2 p.m. The West Port High School Performing Arts Center is at 3733 S.W. 80th Ave. in Ocala.  Tickets are $7 and include a dessert and beverage. CF to celebrate homecoming

The College of Central Florida will celebrate its 2011 homecoming on Saturday, Feb. 12, at the Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road.

Alumni, family and friends of the college are invited to the event which kicks off at 4:30 p.m. between the CF Gymnasium and the Bryant Student Union with barbecue, live music and games for all ages. At 6 p.m. the Patriot basketball teams tip off against one of their biggest rivals Daytona State College.

This year’s homecoming is significant as the first since the college’s name change on May 25, 2010. Homecoming is sponsored by CF Alumni and the Office of Student Life. There is no charge to attend.

Dinner Dance at St. Jude

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with us. Broadway comes to Countryside

The next Sunday Afternoon Arts at Countryside will take place on Sunday, Feb. 13, at 3 p.m. when the Dunnellon Concert Singers perform Broadway tunes.The church is at 7768 S.W. State Road 200.

This talented group of local soloists and choir directors will present a medley of Broadway tunes.

Liberty Council speaker at Tea Party

            Matt Brock from the Liberty Council will speak to Tea Party Solutions at their regular meeting at 7 p.m. at the Berean Baptist Church, 4800 20th St., Ocala. Brock will be speaking on church rights with respect to political speech. Pastors, priests and rabbis are welcome.

Widowed Persons of Marion County sponsors a six-week support program for all persons who have recently lost a spouse. VFW Ladies Auxiliary fashion show

The Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 4781 will host the annual fashion show and luncheon on Friday, Feb. 18, at noon. The theme will be Stars and Stripes Forever. The luncheon will be prepared by their chef Margie with the help of dedicated members. Many wonderful gifts have been collected. Marilyn French is the chairperson.

‘Hyssongs’ to perform at Maranatha

"The Hyssongs" will present a concert of Southern Gospel Music at Maranatha Baptist Church on Friday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m.

"The Hyssongs" are a well-known Southern Gospel Music Family. They encourage and uplift people wherever they go with their family vocal harmony, lively energetic style, humor, brass instruments (trumpet and trombone) and their love for God.

Hospice announces trail ride

Hospice of Marion County, Inc. will hold its 11th annual “Horses for Hospice” Trail Ride on Sat., Feb. 19, on the Central Florida Greenway at the Florida Horse Park in Ocala.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the first ride leaves at 9:15 a.m. Riders travel from as far as Jacksonville and Tampa to spend two hours on the trail. Following the ride, participants can enjoy lunch by Tommy’s BBQ, live entertainment by Bordertown and 50 door prizes will be distributed to participants.

Proceeds from this event will benefit Patient Care Programs. The minimum donation to ride is $30. Wagons are welcome; $30 for driver and $10 per passenger. Presidents and their first ladies

Master the Possibilities Education Center wants you to celebrate President’s Day on Monday, Feb. 21, with the veteran acting and writing team of husband and wife, William and Sue Wills. The Wills’ will bring to life the stories of Presidents George Washington and James Madison and their wives. They are not “impersonators”, but their costumes, dialects, and demeanors will help recreate these historical characters. Mr. and Mrs. Wills have performed at eight of the nation’s Presidential Museum and Historic Sites, - the Clinton, Bush, and Ford Presidential sites to name a few.
