Rev. David L. Brazelton comes to Corridor

OcalaWest United Methodist Churchtakes pleasure in welcoming the Rev. Dr. David L. Brazelton and his wife, Jeanie. He was appointed by Florida Conference Bishop Timthy W. Whitaker to serve as our senior pastor effective Jan. 1.

Pastor Dave was born on a farm in Wyoming. Jeanie is from Sullivan, Indiana. She was born into an active Methodist family. She has a B.A. Degree in Education and has taught in elementary schools, led spiritual life retreats, and women's retreats.

Pastor Dave, as he prefers to be known, had been in full-time ministry for 41 years before “retiring” 2009. Since then he has been working on special projects both at First United Methodist Church in Lakeland, and also at the Florida Conference. Pastor Dave has been the pastor of six churches, most recently (2009) at Mandarin United Methodist Church suburban Jacksonville, Fl. He started Killearn United Methodist Church in northern suburban Tallahassee and stayed for nine years.

His passion has been for working in local churches. He has served in a variety of types of churches including suburban churches, a city center church, an urban church, and three regional churches. In addition to Jacksonville and Tallahassee, he served in churches in Miami, Orlando, and West Palm Beach. Pastor Dave said he “believes that the Holy Spirit is emphasizing worship, music, prayer, outreach and small groups for todays church.” These have been his passion from the beginning of his ministry. He believes they deserve more time, energy and special attention today. Pastor Dave said: " The primary task of the congregation is to make disciples of Jesus. This is accomplished by reaching out to people wherever they are, receiving them just as they are, relating them to God through Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, forming them into Christian disciples and sending them out as apostles filled with the Holy Spirit to witness for Christ for the transformation of the world.”

He served the Florida Conference for six years as a member of the Cabinet and the District Superintendent for the Tampa District. For the Florida Conference he was the Associate Council Director of the Conference Council on Ministries responsible for new church development, evangelism and stewardship. He was also appointed to the General Board of Discipleship (in Nashville) as the Assistant General Secretary in charge of the section on Evangelism.

Pastor Dave has earned degrees form the following schools: Asbury College, University of Kentucky, Candler School of Theology, Emory University and San Francisco Seminary. The Brazeltons have three children and eight grandchildren: Tana is a graduate of Florida Southern College, has an M.A. Degree and is teaching ; Mark is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and is a naval aviator; and Stephen graduated from Georgia Tech and is an engineer for G.E. Pastor Dave said “Jeanie and I are blessed to be able to serve God and the wonderful people of Ocala West UMC. We are excited.
