Social Committee is "heart" of community

By Jan Liberio

Spruce Creek North’s Social Committee is the “heart” of the community. Cindy Hutchins has been president of this committee for more than seven years and a member for more than 15 years. She is responsible for organizing all the events that go on all year long. (Not an easy job!) Her helpers include Fern Eberly, secretary, plus member for 23 years. Treasurer is Joan Laliberty, a 17-year member. Vice president is Cindy Congdon, more than 10-year member. Her other valued members are Dot Whiting, a 23-year member, Jack Lepper, also a 23-year member, Audrey Martin has served 15 years, Doris Scheitlin 10 years, Joan McCarthy 10 years, Jean Opferkuch more than 20 years, Joyce Svilokos more than 10 years. Ann Brennan is a new member.
Lori Littleton has helped for many years making the posters for the different events plus has helped out in different areas when she is able.
The committee meets the first Tuesday of each month (except for election month) at 1 p.m. This is a very hard-working dedicated group as you can see by the years they have served.

Valentine dance and party
The SCN Valentine Dance was held on Feb. 18 with more than 40 people attending. A three-piece band performed for the residents’ dancing pleasures. Desserts and coffee were served.
Coming up on March 10 will be a St. Patrick’s celebration with dancing plus corned beef and ham sandwiches plus some side fixings, and, as always, dessert and a beverage. Tickets were sold Feb. 29 and March 1. Cost is $8 per person. Time is 6 p.m. and music by George.
Looking on to April there will be a dance on the 21st, $5 at the door.
Then on April 29 (Sunday afternoon), there will be an Ice Cream Social, $3 per person. Entertainment by the Songbirds will be provided. Time is 2:30 p.m.
If you like meeting new friends and neighbors please try to attend these functions that the social committee works so hard to put on.

Pancake time again!
The March pancake breakfast is Saturday the 31st. Mark your calendar so you can enjoy seeing your friends and meeting some new ones, $3 each for pancakes, French toast sausages, juice, coffee or tea. See you there and like most of the activities in Spruce Creek North, the pancake breakfast is open to all communities that would like to attend.
SCN Community Garage sales
Barb Turner reports that the SCN community garage sales are scheduled for the end of May or first part of June. Residents it is time to gather all those “goodies” that you no longer need or want. Watch for exact days and times.
Walking or riding at night
Make sure when you are walking or riding early in the morning or at night that you carry a flashlight or reflectors, plus lights on your bike as the drivers cannot see you, You do not want to be a fatality.
Hearing Seminar
Don’t forget to sign up at the SCN clubhouse for March 21. DB Hearing will hold their seminar at 4 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Newest technology in hearing aids will be discussed. Hope you plan to attend.
Oak Run Elephant Sale
On Feb. 4, Oak Run hosted another great White Elephant sale. It started at 10 a.m. and the place was packed with people looking for bargains and there were plenty of them. Hubby Jim and I always make sure to attend these sales (usually twice a year). Good clean items and very friendly people. The food was excellent as usual. We always have the chicken croissant sandwiches but I did talk to a gentleman that tried the seafood croissant and he said it was excellent. If you ever get a chance to go to these sales please go, you won’t be disappointed.
Get well, get well!
Many get well wishes go to Jan Holloway and to Sadie Horton who will be 100 years old in May. We wish them a quick recovery.
Thank You Betty
My many thanks go to Betty Testa for her thoughtfulness. One classy lady!
Good-bye to Wilma Barchey
All her neighbors and friends had to say good-bye to Wilma Barchey as she moved back to Pennsylvania. Wilma was born and married in Pennsylvania She and her hubby Blair retired to SCN over 24 years ago. They were active in many things in SCN for many years. Sadly Blair passed away 2004. Life was not easy for Wilma but she kept herself occupied in many activities like Mah Jongg, Bingo, Euchre and many others. Many neighbors took her out to dinners, lunches etc. to say their good-byes. We all wish her happiness back in the state she was born.
Happy 60th Anniversary Jim
The 23rd of this month my husband Jim and I will celebrate our 60th wedding anniversary. Thank you Jim for 60 wonderful years! Hope to have a few (thousand) more!
