New classes at Master the Possibilities

By June Roberta

Another big week for our Master the Possibilities Center for Lifelong Learning! Along with the 15 programs that are set to begin the week of May 12-16, the new Summer catalog will be available on line and in print May 15th. Simply go to masterthepossibilities.com and you can review and register for well over 200 classes/presentations in June, July and August. Pick up a copy at the Center (8415 SW 80th St.) or at Freedom Library.
I’m told that this will be a very interesting and full curriculum. Of special interest next week will be the “Operation S.A.F.E. (Stop Adult Financial Exploitation) program on Wednesday, May 14, 10 to 11:30 a.m. in Cypress Hall. This initiative is part of Jeff Atwater’s, Florida CFO, commitment to seniors. Attend this interesting and useful workshop, “Be Scam Smart.” “This workshop will teach seniors, their families and caregivers how scams work, how to spot a scam and how to avoid identity theft.” This is free, open to the public and you are encouraged to enroll. For details, go to the Master the Possibilities website or call the office 352-861-9751. It’s a great time to be a lifelong learner!

On the Road Again
(Citizen, May 98)
Bob Woods informed me that he is overwhelmed with the response from adventurers wanting to attend a detailed presentation by an Irish tour company representative who is going to present a briefing on Bob’s up-coming 8-day adventure to Northern Ireland.
The trip to the Emerald Isle will depart OTOW on May 29, 2015 with the tour visiting many historical locations in Northern Ireland such as the Giant’s Causeway, the newly constructed Belfast Titanic exhibit, the 15th century Donegal Castle along with visits to Londonderry and many other notable locations including the Kilbeggan Distillery which is the oldest known distillery still in operation in the world plus many more interesting and historical sites.
Bob told me he still has a few seats available for the informative presentation. If anyone would like to attend this Northern Ireland presentation taking place in Suites B&C at the Arbor Club Conference Center on June 18, call Bob at 352-854-0702. RSVP is required as space is limited.

Best Foreign Films of 2013 Series
On April 30 at Cypress Hall, a 2012 Academy Award picture Amour, French with English subtitles was shown. It was about an elderly couple. The wife becomes very sick but wants to die at home. Her husband is her caretaker with a bit of help from paid workers. It was easy to notice how strong their love was for each other.
Watching their decline was depressing. The film was slow moving with spaces having no action or talking. It leant a certain peacefulness and calmness that is rarely shown in Hollywood movies.

New England Club
Submitted by: Donnamarie Castellano, President
Thursday, May 15 will be our last social of the season. Please join us if you are able. We will meet at the Arbor Club Ballroom at 1 p.m. as usual and have a pizza party. Members not on e-mail signed up during our April social. Members who are on e-mail please watch for a communication from me around May 8 for more details. You will need to reply to the e-mail to let me know if you are planning to attend so we can plan on how many pizzas the club needs to purchase.
Our April social was a huge success with our guest speaker Mindy Nolan-Morrow from Horses N Heroes. Many members donated food, clothing and money to this worthy cause. Thank you all for your generosity! Ten members won beautiful spring decorated basket centerpieces and we had one lucky 50/50 winner.
For everyone who didn’t get a chance to join the New England Club this year; join us when we return on Oct. 16 … same time, same place. We always have a 50/50, door prizes and lots of refreshments. Membership is open to all residents of On Top of the World. If you are a resident of Indigo East you must have a Gateway Pass in order to join. Membership fee for our club year of October through May is $10 per person, payable at the meeting. Remember: You don’t have to come from New England to join our club; you just need a love of New England!
