Volunteers recognized

At the Nov. 14 annual Members Meeting, Marion Landing Board 1st Vice President Don Hake spoke about volunteerism and the many volunteers who give their time and talents to make Marion Landing a wonderful place. He then presented the Volunteer Recognition Award and introduced the recipients as follows: “They are relatively new residents to Marion Landing. They have lived in Marion Landing since 2011 and are very active in many aspects of our community. In addition to taking part in many activities such as classes, cards and games, they are members of Patrol and Sunshine Committee and have worked in the kitchen during breakfasts and socials. They have taken on leadership roles by co-chairing the monthly Bunko game and chairing the Aluminum Can Recycling Committee. They also keep an eye on our sports equipment closet. He has recently taken on the role of co-chair of our CERT team, and they are members of the Election Committee. The recipients of the Volunteer Recognition Award are Harold and Pam Ellis.”

Harold and Pam’s engraved nameplate will join those of the more than 172 other volunteers recognized by the community since 2001, all of which are posted in the Lifestyle Center.

Seeking nominations

Do you know someone you think should be recognized by the community for their volunteerism? Award recipients are chosen from a list of residents who are nominated for the award by their peers. If you would like to nominate a fellow resident for a Volunteer Recognition Award, please forward your recommendation, in writing, to a Board member, member of the Activities Support Committee, or the Activities Director for consideration.

New CERT members

Five Marion Landing residents recently completed the basic Community Emergency Response Team training course and will join Marion Landing CERT. Margaret Veayo, Kimberly Avera, Sharon and Lon Fairchild and Celeneyda Martinez attended classes on topics such as basic disaster relief, basic fire suppression, first aid and CPR training, structure searching, and what to do when faced with an emergency. Under the direction of the Division of Emergency Management of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, CERT is made up of volunteers, and the program’s objective is to train and certify these volunteers as first responders within the community in the event of an emergency such as a hurricane, flood, tornado, etc. Marion Landing CERT meets monthly during the active hurricane season on the third Friday of the month at 9 a.m. If you would like to join CERT, enroll in the training course or would like more information, please contact co-chairs Donna Schmidt or Harold Ellis.

One million miles

Marion Landing resident John Alderson loves to ride his motorcycles and has recently hit the landmark of logging one million miles. John has been keeping track of his mileage for 43 years on 32 bikes and to celebrate his accomplishment, the Marion Landing Road Riders enjoyed a day out which included a surprise party for John at Woody’s Bar-B-Q in Wildwood, one of his favorite restaurants. The Road Riders usually plan a monthly trip. If you would like to join them, a flyer is posted in the Lifestyle Center with all the details.
