Library celebrates Black History Month

-A A +A
By Carol Jones

In honor of Black History Month, Freedom Public Library is planning an African American Read-in. Join them Tuesday, Feb. 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. to read, write your own story, draw, or just listen.

Reading selections will be provided – or bring your favorites. All ages are welcome. Refreshments will be served.

Multiple Sclerosis Support Group

The local multiple sclerosis support group, The Turtles, is meeting at Freedom Public Library. The first gathering is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 28, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and is led by Lynn Zeuch, the group’s facilitator.

She invites anyone who has MS or who knows someone with the disease to come and learn what is new in research and medication, and find answers to questions, such as what to expect, what not to expect, how to respond to family reactions, etc.

The group belongs to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America. Check out their Web sites, www.nationalmssociety.org and www.MSAA.com, respectively.

Incidentally, their name, The Turtles, is an acronym for Turning Unpleasant Reality to Laughter, Encouragement and Support. “You are not alone,” Lynn tells anyone with MS, “information is available and what we don’t know, we can find out.”

They meet the third Monday of the month, except for January when they will meet the fourth Monday due to early voting. For more information, call Lynn Zeuch at 245-0092.

Writers Workshop

The Freedom Writers branch of Florida Writers Association is planning a workshop. Led by Lyn Hill and based on her current Reader for Writers titled Take Another Look, Restructuring Your Writing, the interactive workshop is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 16, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the meeting room.

Bring the first chapter of your manuscript or work-in-progress to the workshop.

Ocala Decorative Artists

The artistic talent of this group knows no end. Many fine pieces are on exhibit in the display case this month, with special focus on Memory and Treasure boxes.

Memory boxes are presented to parents who have recently lost a newborn infant, for keeping mementoes of their deceased child. Treasure boxes are decorated cigar boxes and are given to children who are patients at Shriners’ hospitals, for keeping small items the child values while hospitalized.

The artists created and shipped more than 200 memory and treasure boxes in 2007. For more information oup or to donate cigar boxes, call Bea Petersen at 861-8567.
