Girl arrested for cyberstalking

By Jim Clark

A 17-year-old Ocala girl has been arrested by Marion County Sheriff’s detectives on a felony charge of aggravated cyberstalking of a victim under the age of 16.

Shannon Marie Mitchell allegedly took photos of the younger girl off a popular social Web site and posted it on a porn site, along with the girl’s name, age and phone number. She allegedly posted comments along with the pictures. According to detectives, the victim then received numerous text messages and cell phone calls from grown men asking for sexual favors and nude pictures.

Detectives interviewed Mitchell at home. During the interview, she allegedly stated “I did it.” And she told detectives she would not stop harassing the victim. She was arrested and transported to the Juvenile Assessment Center in Marion County.

The Marion Youth Internet Crimes Unit, a member of the North Florida Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, conducted the investigation.

“We get more and more reports of teens harassing each other over the Internet or with cell phones. We take this crime very seriously,” said Lt. Chris Vorisek, supervisor in the MCSO Major Crimes Unit. “People, especially teenagers, really need to know, if their actions rise to the level of a criminal offense, they will likely be arrested.”

Under Florida law, the name of anyone charged with a felony is public record, regardless of age.
