'Guys and Dolls' to open

-A A +A

Play is at Ocala Civic Theatre

Classic American musical Guys and Dolls is live on stage at Ocala Civic Theatre from May 16 through June 9!
In New York City, the heat is on! Unlucky gambler Nathan Detroit (John LaPaille) keeps trying to outrun the cops as he looks for a place to host “the oldest established permanent floating crap game in New York.” However, his long-suffering fiancée Miss Adelaide (Joan Elizabeth), headliner at the Hot Box nightclub, is more interested in getting Nathan to the altar after 14 thwarted attempts. Meanwhile, suave high-roller Sky Masterson (Frank Louis Carullo), who is looking for action in many ways, has his eye on Save-a-Soul “mission doll” Sarah Brown (Victoria Sexton). He always wins, but the prim Sister isn’t betting on his luck holding out. Everyone’s gambling on something, and the stakes are riding high. Odds are good for an entertaining time!
Nathan’s wisecracking gang of gamblers includes Nicely-Nicely Johnson (Patrick Stanley), Benny Southstreet (Bill Roughton), Rusty Charlie (Gregg Bleam), Big Jule (Darrell Riley), Angie the Ox (Tom Ferreira), Harry the Horse (Adi Knapp), Society Max (Garrett Penning), Liver Lips Louie (Kenneth Lamb), Brandy Bottle Bates (Steve Gordon), and Scranton Slim (Max Trammell).
Miss Adelaide is backed up by the Hot Box dancers: Amanda Franz, Miranda Morris, Melanie Tarter, and Aubrey Wise. Accompanying Sister Sarah in her mission of mercy are her grandfather, Arvide Abernathy (George Coker), and the Save-a-Soul mission band: Agatha (Shelby Randle), Calvin (J.P. Leemans), and Martha (Cassandra Schwartz). General Matilda B. Cartwright (Kim Wise) is also on the scene to make sure Sarah is saving enough souls.
Joey Biltmore (Clark Dougherty) runs the local garage, and Lieutenant Brannigan (David Hedges) provides the long arm of the law. And the colorful characters in the ensemble (Tattiana Blackman, Jordan Davidson, Daniel DiCola, Britani Jurkowski, William Lewis, Aiden McIntyre, and Faith Morales) provide the hustle and bustle of the city that never sleeps.
The swinging score includes songs such as “Luck Be a Lady,” “Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat,” “I've Never Been in Love Before,” “A Bushel and a Peck,” “Adelaide's Lament,” “Sue Me,” and “If I Were a Bell.” With its dazzling dance numbers and glittering skyline, this bold and brassy musical is a winner however you roll the dice!
Guys and Dolls is directed and choreographed by Greg Thompson. Music director is Ryan Pagels. Set design is by Dennis Maulden, with lighting by Robert P. Robins, sound by Timothy J. Dygert, and costumes by Elizabeth Tarner. Ginny Riley is production stage manager.
