Friends trim the library tree

-A A +A
By Carol Jones

Get ready to have your picture taken and hung on the library’s tree. Last week, the Friends of Freedom Public Library and several volunteers erected it, checked all the lights and finished the decoration. All it needs now are photos of smiling faces to make this truly a community tree. Stop in with the kids and grandkids and ask the Reference Librarian to bring out the camera.

Chicken Scratch

Quilt Donation

Here is some more exciting news! For over six months, the Freedom Quilters group that meets weekly at Freedom Public Library has worked on a Chicken Scratch quilt and wall hanging. Now that both are finished, the group is graciously donating these lovely pieces to the library to be used as a fundraiser. They will be officially presented at the Freedom Quilters’ regular meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 17.

This king-sized quilt is a work of art. We can only imagine the total number of hours invested in its creation since no one seems to be sure. The large stars are handmade lace, each point secured with embroidery and then quilted into the backing. Most of the thirty-two members of the group worked on it, says Jeannine Sirkoch, group leader. Another member, Shirley Henion, used her expertise to do the actual quilting. Thank you, ladies, for such a magnificent donation!

Plans are in progress regarding a drawing for the lucky winner of this beautiful prize.  Details will appear in this column as soon as available.

The wall hanging, a smaller replica of the quilt’s design, will be framed and hung on the library’s walls for all to enjoy.

Friends Annual Meeting

The Friends of Freedom Public Library will hold their annual meeting at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, and will present the new slate of officers to the membership for vote at that time. Nominations will also be accepted from the floor. The meeting is open to the entire membership of Friends and their guests.

Immediately following the meeting, a Hospice Fashion Show will delight and entertain you.  Refreshments will be served.

Artist of the Month

Stop in and view artist Heather Dougherty’s wonderful collection of watercolors and paintings. She has seascapes, flowers, vegetables and animals, a colorful display as diverse as it is well done. The peacock is an eye-catcher. Don’t miss it!

Attention, group leaders!

If you have not completed a Meeting Space Application for 2009, please stop in or contact Heather Ogilvie at 438-2580 before your next meeting. Every year it is necessary for each group to have an application on file, establishing the date and time for gatherings. Be aware that if information is not on file by Jan. 1, your preferred date and time may suddenly be claimed by another group.

Computer Classes

and Storytime

Computer classes and Storytime are both expected to resume in January. As soon as available, information will appear in this column. Until then, you may wish to call the library early in the new year for the current dates and times.

On Thursdays from noon to 1 p.m. Arnold Hansen, the Computer Coach, is available to answer your computer questions. No need for registration, just drop in and ask Arnold.

Remember to bring your laptop if you have one, the library now has wireless.
